Word misuse in the hobby and how it annoys you...

Nevermind me... I am sitting here at LAX annoyed as all hell and it's likely coming through in my posts. Sorry.

:)

1. An arcade is a place, not a thing.

Yes, I see that incorrect usage of the word "arcade" on CL often, and it does mildly annoy me. I ignore it because the "arcades" are overpriced and of the ilk that they'd have to pay me to take.

And "mint," to refer to a condition, while it is almost always an exaggeration, is at least correct usage. Incorrect, and much more annoying, usage is "minty" or other such terms which relate to peppermint, plant oil, or fresh breath. The term "mint," in regard to an item's condition, derives from its use in coin collecting where it refers to the same condition as when it was minted... in the mint.

Ahhh.... thanks for the invitation to vent ;)

Oh, and I forgot to mention: "a lot" is two words, "alot" is not a word.

I don't care for that word.

I've seen them on eBay for $2000 so I'm giving you a great deal at $1985. Here is the picture:

That right there is what drives me up walls. I can't stand when they think that the buyers aren't smart enough to know they're selling a piece of crap for quadruple it's value, such as the $900 pole position that "needs the board fixed, don't worry, it's an easy fix" I found a while back locally.

;) ...there's nothing wrong with saying you collect "arcades" ...it's acceptable shorthand and everyone knows what you're talking about. It's like if you say I'm eating Subway for lunch....no one is going to get confused and think you're actually eating the entire establishment...they know you mean Subway sandwich!!!!

Usage is different there... They are both places. You don't say you're eating a Subway, right? You're still eating a gross sandwich foolishly hoping its going to make you skinny.

Does the "arcade" thing really bother people? Whenever people bring it up, it seems like a facetious attempt to be an arcade elitist or something...it just comes off as super douchey. "Classic Arcades" is a completely acceptable shorthand for "Arcade Video Games" ...when people talk about collecting or playing "Classic Arcades" you know EXACTLY what they're talking about in the context of the conversation.

I think you're looking into this too much. I was bugged when I was trying to look through craigslist and kept finding "real arcade for sale" and expecting a liquidation sale and finding nothing but an individual, usually MAMEd, cabinet, so I made a topic for people to discuss stuff like "repo" and all the terms that usually take up sarcastic responses in the thread with the mistakes. I'm not actually enraged about it, nor have I ever been. My rant is just as much a parody of people getting seriously pissed off about spelling on here and screaming at a fellow member as it is the illiterate people of craigslist.

I'm not pointing fingers, I'm just in the camp that most people on craigslist are idiots and can't "speel mrs. packmann". I'm not actually going to hijack someone's thread because they say they "collect classic arcades", and in the examples given, it actually makes sense. I'm not seriously pissed off about this, I made a topic that was meant to be humorous and let people share their grammar-nazi nitpicks since that's done all over a span of many threads and I was interested in hearing other people's rants.

I noticed a recurring trend and used in in contexts I've never seen them actually used in before like the post gozer quoted earlier because I thought it was an amusing change of pace. I'm not sitting over here cutting myself, ripping my hair out, and spitting blood all over my monitor because someone misuses a term, I'm actually laughing my ass off right now and I was when I posted the topic. It seems like literacy is dying on the web and sometimes I like to parody that. If that makes me a super-douche, well... at least I'm not a normal, run of the mill douche ;) I'm not out to offend anybody, I had just read some stupid stuff on craigslist and felt like poking some lighthearted fun at it. If I actually offended anyone I apologize as that was never my intent...

im going to to to my home arcade right now and play all of my arcade games.

THey are huo now because theyre in my house.

i love my arcade games, especially my tron arcade game. I love arcade games, my arcade games are the best.

I hate when someone keeps a board for 2 1/2 years then acts like a douche.

Aw, come on, I didn't mean anything by it. I'm just trying to make fun of crazy craigslist stuff like a lot of people do on here. I'm sorry if I came across as a douche, I just knew there were a lot of other "grammar nazis" here and thought this topic would be a fun discussion :D I've never even seen anyone here misuse the term like I was talking about. Sorry if I came across as anything but lighthearted... I thought people here would find it funny, apparently some didn't, I honestly was wrong and it was a pretty crappy idea for a thread, but I can't really think of a way to undo posting it, so... yeah, sorry.
