You lock the balls by hitting them into the cannon, right? On mine, the left cannon ejects the ball as soon as you launch a new ball. That's not right, right?
No, it's not. This is a *really* common problem with Big Guns though. One of my friends has one with this exact issue. I had it working for a while, but it's acting up again... From what I understand, the vibration of the cannons damages the diodes on the cannon trough switches. On his game, one was even cracked. I replaced them all, and had it working for a bit, then it started doing it again after a few games. So, I'm not so sure that was a fix. I also replaced the 555 timer on the board that controls the guns... no change.
I just didn't have the time to figure it out, and his game is in a location that's not too conducive to working on it, so I haven't slogged through to figure out what's going on.

If you can't find one and need a picture of what one looks like, I can help you out. It's like a long P strip of metal where the rounded part of the P makes contact with the ball. Doesn't seem like it'd be to hard to reproduce.
Did manage to find one off the product number here: http://www.actionpinball.com/elect.htm
It's part #17-1067 on the page.

Wow, that is strange. That's a bad problem to have to because that outlane is a constant drain for me when the gate is shut.
The gate should be open at the start of every ball and during invincible. I had a similar problem with the drain-stop post. It would come up or go down at opposite intervals. The problem was that the diode had come off one connection. Once I set it right it worked.
Best guess would be to check the diode connections on the coil and make sure it's making contact and there's no cold solder connections. Replace it if so and if the problem persists move onto your board.
Does that magnet coil that controls the gate get a diode? I don't think I saw one on it.
