Women of CAX 2009 - My Response and The Future.

Hi,

As one of the ladies here, I was surprised to find anyone offended by Avidgeek's photos!

Yes, sometimes the comments are a little tough... but I did not think it was too bad in the original thread either. I am not one to like personal attacks, and I am sure everyone else feels the same way, but for this thread to blow up in this manner really floored me!!!

Someone will allways be offended no matter what you do it seems... I am offended that someone found those pictures offensive.

I was not offended. I understood the point of the pics. I do think it would have been better to state right off the bat what the intent was though. But the real problem is not specific to this thread but to these forums in general, and that is that they really need to be cleaned up.

Yes, there will be pain for some as rules go into effect and people get reprimanded, but come on. We're all adults here (theoretically). We can abide by basic guidelines and decency. Do we really want to drive people out of the hobby because some people like to post without using good judgment? I heard from one member of our community in PM who is one of the vendors, and he is pretty much set on quitting entirely because of all the negativity and bs that goes on here (I'm not going to mention his name - he can post if he wants to). Is this what we want? It can be hard enough to get the parts we need for a lot of games as it is, without driving vendors out of the hobby.

I am looking forward to a clear set of rules being posted and enforced. I highly doubt that it will infringe on much of the fun we have here. I sure hope that people will have the ability to restrain themselves rather than taking their marbles and going home. I consider myself to be friends with some of the people that may be considered to be "offenders" so I do hope they can handle some moderation, and I believe they can. They are good guys when you meet them in person so I'm sure they can handle it. :)

You're right MC, I don't get it. I'm the bad guy. Whatever.

I publicly apologize to the person in that photo - you know who you are, and everyone is so very concerned that you know what I said, so I am sorry. There, we're all set now. Let's have lunch, maybe this can lead to a beautiful friendship, and we can shop at Macy's together - I'll buy you an outfit...

Long story short: AG's original post contents set the tone for the thread. If he would have just said "See! girls DO play games!" Or something like that, then there wouldn't have been an issue. The wording of the OP was a little off, not the pics. I take pics of folks playing games in my gameroom, and they are mostly from behind - it's the nature of the beast.

And McLemore: threads like this can be cleansed and/or locked to stop things from escalating. This extra post seems to further escalate things. If you don't have time to do it, fine. Let your Mods do it. If they don't do it, find more mods that will. Further more, many members are irritated that there is not a posted set of rules. If you have been so worried about the content of the forum to the point you consider shutting it down, then you should have posted rules years ago!

I'm baffled.. How can those pics be offensive to ANYONE? He has men and women pics from CAX. He made a thread just for the women giving them props for playing games. The men pics are the same way. No offense Mclemore but Avid, you are in the right! Avid has not done a thing wrong with the pics or thread.

One thing he did wrong was break Cardinal rule of cut/paste PM from a complainer. Only thing in his defense, the complaint was ludicris!

Agreed on Tranny comment, it was just a lady with different creative style to her look. If it was my wife that was called a tranny, I would be pissed. Other than 1 member making a remark after mod warning.. it was left alone. Tranny was mentioned again later in a Pic involving Chris flirting with what he thaught was a woman, lol :) That pic is PRICELESS!!!

Seriously, CAX was a fun event for those that went and those who couldn't go is sharing in their experience as a whole.

Kevin

It's like everywhere in this country. We went from a nation that stormed the beaches of Normandy to a nation that seems to think they have a right to not be offended. Damn, we've turned into a nation of pansies. Get over it, man up and don't be so freakin' sensitive.

My "issue" isn't with the moderation here... but rather with the inconsistent and arbitrary moderation. Either moderate or don't. To simply decide one day to moderate when you haven't before... and then go on a banning spree, is, well, pretty shitty.

Moderate or don't. Just don't surprise people by suddenly doing so... and without any consistency. One post gets moderated while the next (worse) post doesn't. One person gets banned while the guy who started the troll thread doesn't.

How about a little consistency? Perhaps an official RULES OF THE ROAD post would go a long way? That way when you do decide to arbitrarily moderate, you could, at least, point the poor unsuspecting fool to the RULES OF THE ROAD thread.

I sense a Wheembulance reference in your future.

While I agree that consistent moderation would be nice, if you read McLemore's post closely, I do not think that you can expect this in the future. What I took from McLemore's posts (for better or worse) is this:

1. He expects a higher level of civility between all posters.

2. While you can expect "stronger" moderation to be enforced when moderators are present, what he really expects is for us to "police ourselves" which I take to mean both use more discretion when posting and report offensive posts rather than respond in kind.

3. The ultimate remedy (if "problems" persist) is not constant and consistent moderation, it is closing the site down.

Take it for what it is worth, but I sure hope KLOV stays. I have both met friends and made contacts for parts that have aided in my restorations that I would not have otherwise. It would be a shame to see that all go away because we cannot display a little self control...

Great - no more neon colors for you. Now just make sure to shave those legs - pleather knee high boots in the summer are a definite fashion faux pas!

:D

Thanks for the tips !

Note to self......pleather knee high boots in the summer are a definite fashion faux pas , maybe consider sandals instead ....
