Just acquired a WOW and its missing the shooting and explosion sounds. Speech and music work. Anybody familiar with this type of boardset? Also seems like the AMP board isn't adjusting the left players sound.

It's gonna be one of two things (probably).

The small amp board has three channels....thus three volume pots, three speakers. If one of the channels goes out, one volume pot stops working, one speaker is dead.

The other thing it could be is an issue on the "game board" pcb. This is the pcb in the card cage with the two connectors plugged into it. I would swap the custom chips at locations X2 and X3. These two chips are identical....and handle input, output, and audio. Swap these with each other and see if the sound changes.........if it does, you know one has issues.

Ok thanx, I'll check these out.

Ok swapped x2 and x3, no change. Must be a bad AMP board POT or something. Are the POTS a common failure point on the Gorf and WOW AMP boards??

No, but the TIP31's being used as op-amps are......as is the 3.3 ohm fusible resistors. Another common problem is cracked/cold solder joints at the header pins.

Are these on the AMP board or the sound boards? Also what is a more reliable and suitable replacement for the TIP31's?

Amp board. You need to pull it and open it up. Look for any browning resistors and cracked headers.
