I was fortunate to have my camera close by as this thing took a shit. It started to whine just a little bit and then it was gone. This is why we recommend a new fly when doing caps on these things, this chassis was running for just under 4 minutes.

You did a good job of cleaning up that old flyback to make it look new....

Wow, I hope you turned it off and opened a window to get those fumes out. That stuff can't be good to breath in! When flybacks go, does it put burn marks on the chassis? I've never had a flyback blow up quite like that.

All my chassis look this clean when i'm done with em, unfortunately, degreaser and a scrub brush doesn't restore bad windings.

I'm guessing you did this for the video. No sense cleaning up a flyback you're going to replace...

No Steve, this was just another cleaned up recapped chassis that was on the burn in rig. This would have eventually into the for sale cabinet with the old flyback on it. It actually is in the for sale cabinet now with a new fly. There was no special cleaning or trick photography here, just a simple picture showing that when you're too cheap to spend the $20 on a flyback, this is what you may soon be rewarded with cuz you had alligator arms.

I sell hundreds of these things a year and try to explain this till i'm blue in the face and still most people don't wanna pay the extra money so they go out the door with a tail light warranty.

I haven't seen one smoke yet, but when the flyback went in my Tempest, it made a high-pitched squeal while it arc'ed a light show. I thought maybe the aliens really were coming through after all, and I'd found the door!

I hear ya. My boss recently had me do the same thing for a cheapo cab he sold to a guy who didn't want to spend any money. I capped it but left the old flyback on. It worked just fine for the three days we tested it before it was picked up, but I have no idea how long it will last...

I have had two do that on initial power up after a recap. They were both working fine before the recap. One exploded and sent pieces all over the shop. Now I always stand clear when powering them up after a recap.
