Game operates normally. Lock first ball in ski lift. Ejects 2nd ball
to plunger. If this ball is shot into the pop-up, Avalanche starts
and the ski lift operates. Avalanche continues even when one of the
balls is lost. Won't stop until 2nd ball is lost. Sometimes, when
the 2nd ball is lost, the game still thinks there is still a ball in
play. Only after giving the game a nudge will the 4th ball be sent
back down to the outhole for a new play.

All 4 balls are loaded and the only switch not showing issue is the
opto switch at the starting gate to the slalom course. I'm really
clueless what that switch does. Everything else appears to be
functional from the self-tests.

I read a strategy guide and it indicates that you can lock two balls
and then get multiball when you activate avalanche but I haven't
gotten this far as I generally activate avalanche before locking the
2nd ball. I can probably test this but there is something definitely
not right imo.

Any ideas?

Make sure your optos are wired correctly. I had a Wipeout whereas two of the optos were swapped in the ski lift area. the connectors are right next to each other and not keyed.

you can determine this through "Switch Test" and see if the correct switch is being reported.

Good luck!

Thanks. I think it has to do with that opto switch. It's not reporting bad on self test anymore but I think it gets flaky during play. Now when a ball enters the ski lift for the first time, it automatically lifts it and ejects a new ball. I just cannot get more than two balls at any time.

Interesting. The machine I had wasn't a bad switch, it was wired incorrectly. You may have a switch matrix problem, wrong switches are being reported and causing the odd gameplay you are describing. Try testing each swich in the switch matrix and verify it's correct vs. the manual.

OK, I found it and feel pretty dumb. The Starting Gate Plunger coil (everything) is missing! The plunger itself is all that I could find in the bottom of the cabinet. Didn't even see it but I now understand the purpose of the opto. Thanks for your help.

GREAT!!!! Hey, with over 2000 parts in a pinball machine, it's VERY easy to miss something.

Glad you got it running!

I've got the parts on order from BAA but this has given me a head start on the cleaning of it since I had to remove the slalom ramp :) I'll make another post once it's working again.

I'm also looking for a coin mech for this machine if anyone has one.

I can tell you EXACTLY what is wrong! Remove EVERY optic one at a time on your machine (ALL SYSTEM 3 OWNERS need to do this!)! Reheat both leads of the LED optic on both boards...as pretty much ALL the optics on your game are "cold". Remember to let it cool before heating the other one, so LED doesn't fall off the board or overheat and damage it!! This will make pretty much all your switch errors go away on Wipe Out and all other system three games!!! Todd from TNT Amusements
