just a question for anyone who's a bit more computer savvy than me.

does anyone know which processes I can turn off when windows boots up? Or know where I can find a list of processes that I can turn off that won't effect windows?

obviously i'm trying to limit what starts up on my mame computer to make it a bit faster.

edit: got it. nice link thank you

No problem. Black Viper's been around for years and he has a lot more on his site now. It used to be nothing but Windows 2000 and XP Services stuff.

He did exhaustive research on every Windows process/service and tons of testing to determine when it's safe to disable each service and how it affects the rest of the system. The table for each Windows OS shows the defaults and then shows three different configurations that you can use depending on how aggressive you want/need to get (SAFE, Tweaked, and Bare-bones). It's a lot of info, but he explains the effects well of each process/service you disable. Check the links in the lefthand column for deeper info, like "Service Information." He used to provide this info in PDF form but it's all in wiki form now.

Also, look for the "Services Registry Files" links for your version of Windows. You can download a zipped .reg file that makes all the "SAFE" changes for you automatically so you don't have to modify each service manually. Just double click the .reg file to merge it into your Windows registry and then reboot. You can also download the "Default" service settings in .reg file form in case you need to change it back.
