I am working on a Williams Time Fantasy. The CPU reported error 5 (IC 20 bad). So I cleaned the ROM, pulled the boards and re-soldered all of the headers, and I still get the same thing.

I pulled the chip which was a 2532. I erased it and re-burned it. After burning I got a bad checksum. So I did it again and got the SAME bad checksum. I did a little digging and there shouldn't be a 2532 in that slot. There should be a 2716. I burned a fresh 2716 and got a good checksum.

Now... the 2532 was the original chip and not a re-pro. I am inclined to put the 2532 back in there under the assumption that somewhere, sometime, someone converted the board to use a 2532 in that spot. Of course to do that you would need to mod the POST code to accept the incorrect checksum which I am assuming was already done. If so, the 2716 won't work there anymore.

Any opinions on what I should do in this case?

I would check that the board is in fact strapped for a 2532 in that spot, then double up the 2716 image, burn it to a 2532 and install.

The tags on the stickers were original. The owner stated that the game had worked and since it stopped working I was the first to look at it. My guess is indeed that the game is strapped for the 2532 in that spot.

Now... I haven't ever doubled a ROM before but I have seen it done. I am not sure I have the software necessary to make it happen although I THINK I have seen it done with notepad. Anyone out there care to double the ROM for me and e-mail it or at least instruct me on how it is done?

You can do it in a DOS window with this command:

copy /b original.bin+original.bin new.bin

original.bin = name of original ROM image
new.bin = name of new image that you want to create.

Thanks! That is what I needed to know. My programmer is ancient and VERY difficult to use. The manual is so murky that the command string I use to program is not even in the manual. On the up-side, it does all of those old chips that the new programmers won't. I'll have to add this command to my notes in the manual...

Well, I tried using the DOS command as well as doubling the ROM using a Hex Editor. Got the same file size and checksum using both methods. Looks like I didn't need to sweat doubling this file after all! Now I just need to install the chip and see if it was indeed the problem after all....

Thanks for the help!
