Williams Switching PS upgrade

The red clamp connectors go on the power input leads to the transformer. There should be a Yellow wire and and a Brown wire going to leads 1 and 8 on the primary of the transformer. Those are the 110VAC inputs.

Couldn't locate a brown wire. A friend tried to splice the white and black wire, but got no power to the switcher. Does anybody have an illustration of how this is done, I'm terrible w/ text instructions and am much better w/ visuals. Thanks.

Find the primary of the transformer. Leads 1 & 8 (they are numbered) should have switched power going to them, regardless of color. Just verify that they are the ones by testing with your meter when the power is on.

The wiring diagrams are in the drawing sets. You can find a Defender drawing set at arcarc.xmission.com in the Williams video game section.

Isn't Defender one of those that don't always react well to the Switcher upgrade?

Shhh! Let him find out the hard way. The lesson is never learned the easy way.

Is their not an electrical engineering solution to this problem? Can we NOT put an RC Resistor - Capacitor circuit, correctly engineered, in, to similuate the power on sequence of the original Williams linear supplies when backed by a switching supply?

Am I dreaming?

I've tried it a couple of times, but the inrush on the big caps usually trips the current limiter on the switcher. If the resistor is big enough to keep the current down, the slow rise on the +5V causes flakey operations.

I learned the hard way that the switcher upgrade is actually a downgrade. ..and making a nice adaptor is a pain in the ass
