Hey all..

I ran across this today...

I didn't realize that there are more than one version of the Williams speech board.

There is the standard c-8228 speech board used in Sinistar and various pins...

Then, I came across a C-10717 speech board that looks almost identical with an exception.

The C-10717 speech board has (2) 0-ohm resistors next to the U4 and U5 eprom sockets.

They are jumpers labeled W1 & W2 and the other is W3 & W4.

I couldn't find any documentaion on this but I assume it is to select the type of eprom being used.

Right now, I have jumpers W1 and W3 set and I'm using 2532 eproms (no speech output so far) I'm fearing that I have the jumpers set wrong.

The C-8228 doesn't have these jumpers and only takes the 2532 eproms.

Anyone familiar with this 'other' SPEECH board?

Thanks for the link that you provided.

Unfortunnately, it gives jumper settings for the SOUND board and not the SPEECH board.

I have sound board settings set correct. In fact, if I use a regular speech board, it works fine. (W1 is removed on the Sound board)

I still need jumper settings for the SPEECH board. What I'm not sure of is if I should move over one jumper or both. Following the traces, the W3-W4 jumper goes to pin 21 of the EPROM which is the difference between a 2716 and 2732 EPROM. However, W1-W2 does go elsewhere - to ground I believe.

Here are pics of the two different boards.

The boards are itentical in layout with the exception of the two 0-ohm jumpers in the middle of the board next to the U4 and U5 EPROMS.

1st pic is the regular "C8228" Speech board, 2nd pic is the other "C10717" Speech board with the jumpers.

Aw shucks, you don't even have ALL the iterations in there.

The 8228 board is the older version of the two, and can only use 2532 EPROM chips for the speech data.
The 10717 board is a revised version, and I believe the jumpers are there to select between 2532 and 2732 EPROM's. I just don't have the data here regarding which jumper settings do which.

There is a third version out there, the 8225, which uses a different CVSD chip for the speech DAC and again only 2532 eproms.

Ok, found it in the manual for Sorcerer
Stuff jumpers W2 and W4 for 2532 eproms
Stuff jumpers W1 and W3 for 2732 eproms

Well, there you go... Wrong jumpers!

Reconfigure your board.

I was sure that the jumper setting was wrong, I just didn't know if one or both.

Thanks all!

Moved BOTH suspected jumpers and it did the trick!

My SINISTAR LIVES!
