I have a Williams sound board (D8224) that I got with a Stargate. The sound board works ok, but I'm getting wrong sounds, probably because the sound ROM is incorrect.

The sound ROM has an original Williams sticker on it, with "2" printed on it, and the "2" written through it in pen/pencil, so it now looks like a "4".

What I'm wondering is how a 2716 can become a 2532?

Also, if you have the correct ROM, but the board is incorrectly jumpered for the ROM/game, what is the likely result?

Williams sound boards can use a 2716 or a 2532.....but the jumpering has to be correct. If the board is jumpered wrong.....you get no sound. If you truely have a "4" sound ROM....that's for Joust (and would explain your wrong sounds).

Cheers for the reply Edward.

That's the thing, it seems the chip was originally a 2716 (original green sticker with "video sound rom 2" printed on it, but with pen strokes through the "2" to turn it into a four). So I'm wondering how a 2716 can become a 2532? (I'm presuming it's a 2716 based on the sticker, I've no way to test otherwise)

I can understand the board being jumpered to accept both types, but how a 2716 can become a 2532!?

It must have Joust on it alright, as when I do a sound line test through the game diagnostics, there are 5 different sounds, but they're all not the sounds I hear on Stargate through MAME, but are the first 5 sounds in the same test on Joust through MAME; Joust has an extra 6th sound (wing flap) which doesn't sound on my hardware (I guess because it's Stargate running the diagnostics).

When they started burning Joust ROMs they labels hadn't arrived from the printers, so they just repurposed some Stargate labels they had laying around. They penciled in the 4 over the 2. It was always a 2532 under the label.

I have a Defender that works but plays the wrong sounds. rom corruption issue perhaps? it plays sounds in the right places (so I think), but they're just the wrong sounds being played.

just been wondering for fun what could cause that. figured I'd post here since it's like a general Williams sound board topic. :p

I forget what sound board Joust even uses, the Stargate style one maybe? I think Defender was the one with the unique hardware and everything else shared.

Defender will use either sound board, and the rest use the D8224 (most of them anyway)

well yes, I really wanted to know where to look with my particular issue though. so far all I've been told is to start probing the like driver IC shorting pins to ground... it plays all the sounds, just not the CORRECT sounds when they should play.

I mean if there's parts I should replace I'll replace them. I finally got an original PS board for it, I'll rebuild it with one of Bob's kits first so I can punt on this switcher bullshit.

I haven't mucked with this game in months, I've just had it sitting in storage the last few months. lol

Joust, Stargate, and the rest of Williams vids and a lot of their pins use the same (essentially) sound board.

I think your best bet to get it working is to follow one of the guides, like this one http://home.scarlet.be/~fb054529/soundwill/esoundwill.htm . There are things you can check, like voltages, check or replace chips, but your best bet is to get a test eprom and follow the guides. A few months back I was troubleshooting a system 6 driver board, and the test ROM allowed me to pinpoint and repair the problem very quickly, within a few hours, and I'm not an electronics tech.

I also had problems with the sound board in my pin, but they were correct, just low volume, which turned out to be either a couple of caps or a transistor. Understanding the schematics would help a lot too, or hitting the right board might get you there quicker. An alternative board to ask about troubleshooting your board would be at RGP, your game is a vid, but the sound board is the same as in pins, and the posts there are usually intelligent; avoid the arcade video game forums as they are infested with porn and commercial spam, and idiots. The more detailed your posts, like what you're experiencing, what you've tried, replaced, etc, the more likely you'll get good, detailed responses.

My initial thought is a wrong sound ROM......you'd be surprised how offten this happens.
