Ok i need some info from the pin heads out there. I am going to go pick up this pin from a guy that i have known for 18 years, and he bought this when it first came out. He is now selling all his pins. I had told him back in the day to call me when he was ready, so now the day has come this Saturday. What i need to know is anything that i should really look at, serial #, common bad areas, ect. I am more of a game guy then a pin guy. Thanks ahead of time for any info.

Look for playfield wear, burned out lights, open the header and check the connectors..see if any are burned. Put it in test mode and make sure all sounds, mechanics are working. Before you buy..take some pics and post in the Pinball section first though. Whats the asking price? Generally HUO machines are pretty nice if they have been maintained properly. That can mean big money though.

Idol and Path of Adventure issues are going to be your most common culprits and you can almost bank on them being there. Faded artwork is almost a gimme too on that title.

Also take off the glass, put it into test mode, and test everything. You may want to search online to get the rules so you understand how the scoring / rules work to get details to help but at least try every pop bumper, drop down, etc. with your hand or by rolling a ball at it and also run the tests via the coin door switches to test everything including the lights and flashers.

I have yet to see a pinball machine for sale by anyone other than a dealer where everything worked and most of them I've seen used at a dealer had issues too.

The good thing is that there are specific tests for the POA and idol. I would be more concerned with pf wear than anything else. The slings tend to beat the ball into the pf. Everything's fixable tho, and parts readily available

Also I wouldn't freak about burned connectors unless the boards themselves are damaged. From what I've seen there are 2 types of IJ, those with burned connectors and those with new replacement connectors.

Price is a big factor. If he is knowledgeable and is asking market value, check everything. If he wants 1500, hand him the cash, fold it up and run. :) If he truly bought it new and has owned it all this time, I would imagine a no fade cabinet. A no fade original IJ cab is a rare thing and worth a few hundred over your average price.

Hey thanks guys. I do appreciate all your input. The game was on route for a few years at a pizza joint, then pulled and put in a beach rental. He is letting me have it for $2,000 dollars. I was also told to look at the roms, and to see if the ramp is stainless . Have no idea what to look for on the roms. Any help there? Thanks again

Hey Darrell, I wouldn't worry about ROM revisions, that stuff is trivial.

Those pins are pretty smart. If there are any major errors, they will show up on the DMD as soon as you turn it on. After that, open up the coin door and put it into the self test mode via the little push buttons on the back of the coin door, errors will show up here as well.

Above all, play a game or two and if things are good enough to make it through a couple games, the rest is easy.

The biggie is playfield wear. I am sure you know that already. Replacing a PF would be expensive and time consuming. Plastics are not too cheap either, so if you see a bunch of busted ones, consider it. Still thats a steal for a pin that will never lose value. Well, as long as Stern keeps putting out crap it wont *zing*

For 2K take it and be gracious. If I was offering an Indiana Jones for that price and my friend started questioning everything I would be a little perturbed. Unless it is missing all the boards or looks like total crap, that is a steal.

OH no i am not questioning anything. I just want to know what the main things where to look at. I know that is a hell of a price and i will be getting it. I just wanted more info. Thanks Darrell

Beach house has me thinking fade, but if it isn't faded, see my above comment about folding up and running. :D Great price on a working IJ.

I haven't seen a Indiana Jones yet that the yellow hasn't faded! Same for Dr. Who...

I just think that's how the yellow was on those cabs - sun being a factor or not...

And for 2k, take it and run! I would LOVE to find one that cheap! There 3k+ in the Chi-town area....

2K is plenty for the OP. He can buy about 20-40 Atari Star Wars' for that kind of dough.

I own one and its a great game!
Just a note on the tests, especially for anyone else buying a machine.

There can be TONNES of errors with a game and all you have to do is take out the batteries on the CPU and put them back in when someone comes to look at a game.

The only error that there will be is to set the time and date.

Doing a 'test' when you are buying a game means nothing. You have to actually LOOK at the game!
Playfield is definately the most important factor when looking to buy a game. Some people also are concerned about the cabinet.
The key is to look for 'burning' of connectors and the wiring. Also, I like to take out the backglass and look at the 'light burn'. Usually that can be cleaned easily, but most of the time guys don't and its a good way to tell if a game was on for long periods of time.

Hope some of that stuff helps, and WTG on your new game!

Thanks everyone for all the info. I ended up buying that and a couple more. Friend of mine also locked in a few.
