Im looking to add another pin and im set on these 2 games,

I see the Original has a 7.9 rating and the sequel an 8.1

Playfields look to be similar, as well as the overall layout.

Why should I choose one game over the other?

Thanks!

Tough question; a lot depends upon whether you enjoy newer/DMD pin's more than older non-DMD pins I suppose.

I personally prefer (and am hunting for) the original - I played it a lot when it first came out, and have never grown tired of it.

I've played HS2 plenty as well - great music, similar theme, and even faster play with the turbocharger and all.

Both great pins, but I actually got a bit bored of HS2 because I found it to be a pretty easy pin. Still challenging, but just got boring after a while.

Honestly, it's probably what you've heard before - play them both a few times, and see which appeals to you more. Both are available in Visual Pinball to give you a general feel for the layout, how they play, and sound effects/music.

Regardless of which you go with, they're both great games in my opinion - not as deep as later games, but still fun.

I prefer HS2, but probably just more due to familiarity with it. Love the turbocharger.

High Speed

Well I have the original HS and it just keeps us coming back to it. It was my favorite back when I was a teen in the 80's, so I had to own one once we got our house. The Getaway HS II has a better stop light and has the DMD, but the playfield is cluttered with the turbo charger which IMO adds nothing for me. I played it at the PBHoF in Vegas and did not like it, I tried to but rather play HS!! The original (HS) is a more open PF so you can see whats going on ,etc. Play both see what you like, thats what counts! I will never get rid of my High Speed! Good Luck

I just love the older games, i think ill go for the original.
Thanks everyone!

This is one of the few sequels that is pretty different from the original. He didn't just throw a bunch of extra stuff on top of a HS1 layout, as the HS1 parts of the game are tweaked as well.

It's a tough one for me, but I always land on HS1 first because I am pretty infatuated with that game. The gameplay and layout design is simple, but really well done. With that said, the average player tends to like HS2 more. It offers a lot more modes and bells n' whistles. The super charger, when working properly, can be a pretty cool element. Shifting gears in the middle of a ball can get pretty crazy. I don't have anything against ZZ Top, but the soundtrack does get old pretty quick.

You know what...you better just play both and make the decision.

Although I like HS2, I prefer the original. I feel that HS2 just doesn't hold up as a DMD pin, whereas HS is easily one of the best System 11 machines.

The music alone would have me going to the original. I have owned a HS2 adn it is great fun to play, and the supercharger is cool, but I am a Sysyem 11 junkie, so my vote would be the original.

It will be harder to find in nice shape (most likely) but worth it.

High Speed Hands down. I just fixed one up and it is awesome. Again I played it a lot in the 80s and the music, topper light really get make up for the older system 11 HW. The game play is very fast and multiball modes are fun. It is a game that does not bore at all. The hard part is finding a nice one or one period. I had to deal with a rough cab, minor flaking on glass (I triple thicked it), a new plastic set and machine had been sitting for years uncleaned. It is a game that just does not trade hands as much as people think and there are not a lot of repro or spare parts.

One of my happiest days of the pinhead life was when an original High Speed was delivered to my house a few months ago.
I loved it when it first came out, and I love it now. It's my favorite machine in my line up.
I've tried HSII, but it didn't float my boat too much...

"Hey Buddy, pull over!"

You Guys are definitely right about not being able to find 1!
Its like they all vanished off the face of the earth.
That alone tells me the game must be a keeper.

Last year at Midwest Gaming Classic there was a High Speed wound up with pallet wrap for sale "untested as-is" for $200 or something like that. I schemed pretty hard to come up with a way to bring it home, but I just didn't have the dough or room in my Cavalier :(

High Speed is more fun. Both are great games. High Speed tends to be a reasonably priced game if you can find one. Since there is a repro back glass now I suspect a lot are being kept. Most had flaked back glass. I had to triple thick and repair mine and it was a lot of work to make it look good. Its a pin that is keeping higher end DMD games in the garage as it is that good and my son loves it.

SYS11 pinballs - I have been telling all my friends now for the last 5 years to buy up all the SYS11 (High Speed, Whirlwind, Earthshaker, Taxi, Diner, Pinbot, Cycone, Banzai Run, Black Knight 2000, Bad Cats) games that they can find. 3-5 years ago most of these games were cheap. These games will be the next trend of higher priced games (relative price increases of 3X to 4X of the value they were at a few years ago).

That's the reason they are going up, you keep telling people to buy them, and they're disappearing :)

Original (High Speed). Getaway is a great game, but I just can't get enough of High Speed. It is the game I turn to the most when I want to play a few games. It's simple yet challenging, the art is excellent, and the sound is pure 80's and top notch. If you're in to that you can't go wrong.
