I just acquired a williams flash pinball. And the playfield lights up and the back glass lights up but the score doesnt. And on the MPU there are 2 solid red lights on it. Anyone can help me troublehsoot what might be wrong why it is not booting up or going into attract mode? Could it be a mad MPU? Let me know you experience on Williams System 6 MPU and help me find out how to get this working.
Thanks,
I have relaced quite a few fewses on it already.

Let me know.
Thanks,
Aubrey

A easy place to start (got to start somewhere).

Open up the coin door and then flip the power 2X kinda quick. Depending on what problem you are having, this may help you, or may not. This just resets the MPU to factory settings.

If both LED's on the cpu board are lit you have major problems on either the cpu board, the driver board, or both!

Be sure to follow the repair guide posted earlier in this thread.

Does the cpu board need the battery's to be installed for it to work right? I was reading in the manual that they might need to be installed for it to boot right. Is that a correct assumption?

Sometimnes when I turn on the power I get a clicking noise from what sounds to be the solenoids..but when I turn it off then back on it goes away. Is that any sign I should be aware of?

Also sometimes when I press the reset button in the coin door the 1 led light will come on solid but only 1 of them.

Where would that 40 pin connector be located and how hard is it to replace? Also battery's are they tripple AAA or double AA?

well just an update I have 1 guy coming over tonight to look at the machine. But tomorrow I also have a guy that says he could fix the machine in 1 hour time...So I am hopefully to be playing by tomorrow night.

There were a few problems the guy fixed.

1. The diode on the Driver board was from 1979 and was fried.
2. The eprom on the MPU Was bad and he replaced it.
3. He also fixed some of the bulbs that were burnt out.

That was basically all that was wrong with it oh and a couple fuses I put in were wrong and he fixed that.

It plays perfectly now. I just need someone to come over and re ring and wax the playfield and it will be perfectly restored.

Thanks for all your help!

Aubrey,
No need for a technician to change the rubbers and polish the playfield. This is something simple that you should do. Order the rubber kit for flash from Marcospecialties.com or bayareaamusements. They will ship you the rubbers for your game along with a diagram of where they all go. As long as you're replacing existing ones, it should be fairly straight forward where each of them goes. While you're there order some Mill Wax and follow the directions. It's best if you remove most of the above playfield components to get good coverage. You should also be careful where those playfield inserts are warped so not to get wax in there. But 3-5 coats on that old machine as it could use it.

Regards,
Russell

Do NOT use millwax...it's a solvent.Use magic eraser with isopropyl alcohol(carefully) followed by novus 2 to get the residue off then use a good 100% carnuba wax.

Great score for $75. I have a guy I work with that has one he wants to give me for free. Same deal doesn;t work - has back light activity and that's it. No acid damage (how I have no clue as it has the same batteries for the last 10+ years (told him to remove)
If you would take a picture of the head units boards I'd sure appreciate it as I would like to verify the wiring he has. It's clean but there's a few wires that just look funny to me. It hasn't worked since he got it 10 years ago.

So... did it take more than an hour?

Whoever fixed it is BAD ASS. I fixed one back in the fall, took me more than an hour, though. Great, great game. I really liked those early Williams SS games.
