Ive decided to put together this classic machine in my basement, I have been following several guides, I can get the game in game over mode with all 0's for scores, but for some reason I cant get the game to start and get any game play action. The game used to work perfectly fine.. please help!

Sounds like you're in audit mode.

Probably a bad 5101 chip, and/or the batteries that save high score and game settings are dead.

Try swapping the batteries first, and if you still can't get out of audit mode, and if the 5101 is getting correct voltage through D17, swap the 5101. You can use a 2101 as a short-term substitute (although it'll drain the batteries quickly.)

Check the switches in the ball trough. If the game thinks there is a ball missing it will not start a game.
cheers

On the Driver board below the main MPU the two connectors on the right side may be dusty and tarnished, pull them off and reseat them on the Driver Board. If the Main MPU has the original prom set up with 2716 roms. You probably will want to modify the board to the 2732 roms. It will run a lot cooler and prevent a lock up of your coils. It happened on mine, when i was not watching. I had to replace all the coils except the flippers. Williams published a fix for this with details.

Yep, I frustrated myself over my FP not starting. Then I finally realized I was missing a ball.

Does your Firepower have the original MPU setup or the upgrade?

Thanks for looking,
Jim

If you had a Firepower, wouldn't this be nice to have…one of these days I'll clearcoat it and install it in my game!
