Williams Defender Video/Sync issues

wait. are you trying to run Defender? cause that only works with Defender boards. Stargate and later won't work. :x
Yep it was defender.
Update though I now have a working set ready to go I still need to do the power mod for the ram though

So here is what I did to get the board set I last mentioned to work.. I replaced all the ram sockets with new dualswipes and all new 4164 ram then I got a bad rom 3 error after some digging around on the rom card #1 by swapping rom 3 I got a cont rug so I took rom board 2 and used rom board 1s rom 3 and rom board 2 was the winner

So now i have a rom board that has a cont rug with rom fail along with another dead mcu i will have to get back to later lol20250322_165906.jpg

More on the other rom board that had const rug.
I was able to get it going replaced 4 sockets and 3 eproms. Now it is working which is great because I will use it to fix the other dead mcu😎

Defender and Stargate I believe much of the 2532s had the gold contact legs, these are highly prone to the skinny parts of the legs just breaking off. you can spin your wheels so much on stuff like that if you don't look closely. the last Stargate I fixed they sent it in to me and a majority of the roms had broken off legs. like 1 or 2 I'd be content with replacing legs, not that many. I wound up just donating the entire set of roms from one of my boards to get it running and be done with it. their old roms I guess I'll have to transplant into machine pin sockets someday.

I can see that for sure. I try to keep those roms in play as long as they will still work. The machine pin sockets are definitely good for repurposing those with busted legs :)
I am working on the sound board now.. Correct me if Im wrong but cant I just use -5dv and 12vdc to power the board ?

with a switching power supply that's exactly what you would do. unless you have one of the AT box style ones, those have -12V. the +/-12V from the linear power supply is to simulate AC power to pass through the bridge rectifier on the sound board. the pinball games where they originated were apparently powered off an AC tap of the transformer. the sound boards are their own independent thing, they don't use +5V, that's generated off the voltage regulator after the bridge rectifier. some games have a grey +5V wire crimped onto the sound power plug but from what I know it doesn't go anywhere. I tried powering sound boards by themselves with my PowerPro and it really didn't appreciate it at all. lol

Defender that I know of may sound a little off with switching power supply, probably on account of the minus voltage not being as "strong" as the linear power supply would put out. these games are one application where I would encourage running original power supply, if only for the CMOS health. people go apeshit with heatsinks and voltage pots and whatever and I never bothered even on commercially operated games that are on more in one day than your game at home would be on for like a year. I actually had boxes and bags of those and gave them away when I got divorced.

I have linear, switching and along side a Transformer that puts off the ac levels I need to work most all of the early to late 80s systems. I usually have a variac handy in line with a120v 100W bulb when testing for shorts :)
I try to test with both linear and switching when it comes to the Williams board sets just to give me a warm and fuzzy that no matter if they use a linear or switching the board set will be stable.
I did catch that on the Sound board schematic but I went ahead and connected it using my switchers and had success after replacing the TDA and Rectifier :D
