I am new to the forum and looking for help with repairing my Williams Defender game.

Everything starts up fine, initial test indicates Ram ok, and then it defaults or goes to a screen that says the following:

01 ???? coins left
Press advance to step through test
Press high score reset to make change

The problem is when I press the advance or any of the three buttons nothing happens. I suspect I have a bad switch and or a problem with the main CPU board and Rom board? I am going to start with replacing the three button switch but have not had any luck locating one for sale. Any help is appreciated.

I'm interested in knowing how to wire these up too, I don't even have the switches, cause my coin door was replaced. I got some of those newer Midway service panels laying around though... probably rig one of those up.

I don't know which wires go to it though, I don't have any loose ones left, lol

except for a connector with yellow, red and black wires, could that be it?

Well, firstly grab the defender manuals at:
http://www.robotron-2084.co.uk/manualsdefender.html
and look at the game wiring schematics in the "Upright Drawing Set
(Later Series Boards)" manual, page 18

You may not have faulty switches so dont replace them yet, as you may be missing or have a faulty earth lead between the switches and the ROM board. check pages 18 and 3 in the aformentioned manual.

with the game turned off and unplugged:
if you have a multimeter using the continuity setting, test the switches first. they are F Type switches (see the attached pic) with two rows of pins on either side of each switch which makes them double pole double throw. two rows of three pins, one set either side of the switch. in each group of three the center pin is common, and alternates to the terminal immediately either side. two switches are momentary (push to toggle and release to return) and one is of the toggle type (push to toggle and push to return)

if the wiring and switches test out ok, follow the diagrams on page three and check the earthing points and connections to and from the control panel, coin door and between the boards. also check your game has an earth pin in the mains plug and that the earthing straps to metalwork in the cab have good continuity with that earth pin.

if you are still not sure whether the switches are good or bad, try briefly grounding the appropriate pin on the ROM board coin door wiring loom connector 2J3. (again in reference to the diagrams on pages 3 and 18)

report back your results!

source of switches:
Digikey
F series push button, momentary http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=401-1225-ND
F series push button, alternating action http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=401-1223-ND

i am hoping a faulty switch can be removed from the three switch set on the bracket by bending the metal tabs back and replacing with this one.
iirc either digikey or mouser also had the mounting bracket.

i picked up some ganged switch sets of ebay recently to suit this very purpose, but cant see them now so digikey is your friend!

also some of the pinball part suppliers have similar williams gang switch banks (4 switches or three sw's) so you could repair your switch bank.

andykmv,

Thanks for the advice and quick response. My plan is to run through what you have recommended this weekend. I'll will report back.

AMG,

Perfect. I am going to check things out as recommended by andykmv first and then if it doesn't work I'll buy a new switch. I have been searching for this part on and off for a while and could not find it. Thanks for the link.
