Just wondering how you guys have reproduced the spotted texture of Williams coin doors. I'm attempting to repaint a few with a rattle can and not having much luck. Seems it's a lightly textured semi gloss. I've tried Rustoleum Textured Black on one but it's a little to much like truck bed liner coating.

I think most folks use Rusoleum Hammer black textured, then spray some coats of satin black over top to get the color closer to ideal.

I'm bad at describing things like this, but here are some pics of the NOS Coinco door I got for my Bubbles. I hope this helps!

I might have to try this, I was trying to clog up some of my caps today to try and get a few of them to spit and sputter but didn't have any luck. The only reason i didn't try the hammered was the first time i used it, it seemed to have this orange peel effect more than anything where the Williams texture is more raised and less abundant than the hammered. I will atleast give it a shot tho (i've got 5 of these doors).

You can see the texture semi well on the top door in this picture. thanks

I got lucky and found a door without scrapes or dents.
I just cleaned it up,went over it with acetone and repainted it.
It has the original texture and fresh paint.

I recall a thread on rec.games.pinball where this was discussed.. The closest method according to many was the sputter method. I've gotten a similar textured finish that way. Finish as usual, with a couple of wet coats of RustOleum satin black, so that it is fully covered. Then you finagle the nozzle half way down so that the paint kind of sputters out.

Another possibility would be flicking paint with a toothbrush from a distance.

I sure would like to know EXACTLY the method that was used to do that in the factory.

Another method you could use is to remove the spray nozzle tip (plastic insert where the paint comes out) from the spray can.

i use a can of automotive grade paint called rock gaurd. its a splatter type finish, like you see on the lower rocker panels of cars, durable textured finish. just apply a light coat. looks very close once painted. hope this helps.

The funny thing is we want to recreate the original splatter that we would otherwise repaint.
