Make Trax Cocktail Restoration Project

Hey everybody,

I just got 2 Williams cocktail cabinets yesterday and have decided that I'm going to restore at least one of them. *I have most of the tools and parts I need for this project, but I haven't decided yet which game I should restore. *I already have 2 Make Trax control panel overlays, so that would make things a little easyer. *But I'd also love to have a Robotron or Defender cab! (Although that might be a little more work).

So, before I make a decision, does anybody have any advise on what game I should make?

Here's what I have to work with:

The first cabinet.

The inside is pretty clean.

The second cabinet.

This one could use some cleaning.

Part of the power supply. *Not sure if it works.

I have some other parts that aren't pictured. *I might upload them if I need help or if anyone wants to see them.

Continued..

I just got this power supply working a few hours ago.

One of the control panel overlays.

I think this is a 13' monitor. *I'm not sure how I'm going to mount it in if I choose to do Make Trax.

Another monitor. *It might be 19', but it looks bigger than that.

One of the joysticks. *Not sure what type. *The guy I bought it from said it was the best of the best.

Will that joystick work? I restored a Defender, and it used special cocktail joysticks due to the lack of available depth in the control panel area. Of course Defender and Joust use 2-ways, I'm not sure what Robotron used.

I was thinking about that earlier today. It doesn't look like they'll fit. :(

What kind of joysticks did you use? Where can I buy them?

Hey, I know you. :)

Those leaf switch joysticks will work, I had the same type mounted in my Robotron before I sold it.

Like I said, Williams had the following cocktails:

Defender (Pain to find parts for)
Stargate
Make Trax
Robotron
Bubbles
Moon Patrol
Motorace U.S.A
Splat

If I was you, I'd finish up the Make Trax by buying a

Jamma Harness: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-ARCADE-JAMM...tem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19bb4d81a4

Game Board: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-ARCADE-JAMM...tem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19bb4d81a4

and some wood for the Control panel. If you know your woodworking stuff, fabrication the CP's shouldn't be a big deal. If you desperately need help, let me know.

Hey, small world! :)

A JAMMA harness? Make Trax doesn't use JAMMA. I actually managed to find an original harness for Make Trax boards for $30.

Also I think someone put a Make Trax board in unknown condition on ebay recently. I might buy that.

So finishing the Make Trax would be a cheap and easy solution. The one problem is that I'd have to rebuild the monitor to fit in vertically. And another small problem is that I can't find the instruction card for Make Trax anywhere one the net. Doesn't seem to be too popular.. :(

Anyways, how did you get the Joysticks to fit in the control panel. Actually, how do you set up the control panel all together? Should install the backlights from the other cab into this one?

I have a couple of MakeTrax boards I need to test. If either of them work, I'd be willing to sell it.

As to fitting joysticks, you can do what the operator did to my Joust cocktail. He spray painted two metal meat loaf pans black, drilled & cut a hole in the bottom of the control panel, mounted the joysticks through the hole and put the meat loaf pans over the part of the joystick that hung down.

(BTW: I don't really recommend this, it looks like A**!)

I'm trying hard to picture this. What purpose did the pans serve?

Ok, I've decided to build both a Make Trax cabinet and a Robotron cabinet. I have another thread like this on BYOAC that I'm going to mostly post about the Robotron. And this thread is going to focus on the Make Trax.

Right now it seems all I can do is build the other power supply (which I'm a little unsure about). After that I'll need to order parts For the machines, which I probably won't be able to do for another week or two.

Untill then, if anyone can think of something I might be forgetting please let me know. Thanks.

The pans kept prying little fingers away from the joysticks. Because the control panel has so little depth below it, the joysticks actually poked through the hole the operator made in the bottom of the control panel cavity. The pans were attached on the outside over the holes to cover the bottom of the joysticks and the holes.

Alright, I just ordered a Multi-Williams board from Jrok! Can't wait for it to come :D

Update...

Ok, so since I can't do any wiring until the board gets here, I decided to work on the cabinet itself.

So today, I sanded and painted it.

I probably should of spend more time sanding... :/

Oh, and after I painted I realized that the pieces from the working coin mech wouldn't fit in the cab I just painted.. I guess I'll have to paint that too.

And last, I bought a piece of plexiglass and painted it. It actually turned out better than I thought it would. I'm still not sure if I'm going to re-do the laminate on the side. I feel like I'm gonna have to re-sand and paint it. I don't like how it looks. :/

Anyways, maybe after I buy another can of paint I'll do the same for the other cabinet. (and hopefully I'll do a better job.)
