So I recently bought a working Ninja Gaiden in a Williams cabinet. The seller told me he thought it was originally a moon patrol because you could see some blue underneath the black sides. I started stripping the sides and I have found blue, brown, and gray layers on this cabinet. I can see some of the blue stripes common to Robotron. In any case, I will be cleaning the cabinet up until I can ultimately decide what it will become.

One down side is I can't play the current game. It started playing blind about 5 minutes after getting it home. That was unfortunate. I was looking forward to playing it. That is another thread in the monitor section.

Pictures....

Nice. Williams cabs are awesome- no MDF to worry about. Restore it to a Robotron or pick up the jrok board and make it a Multi-Williams cab.

Yeah, I have been wanting to restore an arcade cabinet for the first time since joing the KLOV forum. I have always liked the sideart of the Williams games. This cabinet popped up on the local craigslit and I couldn't refuse the oppurtunity. The seller thought it was originally Moon Patrol which peaked my interest. When I started stripping the first side, I found 4 layers of paint. The layers were black, then blue, then brown, and finally grey.

Were there any Williams cabinets that had the wood paneling?

You can tell by the shape that it was originally a Robotron. Moon Patrol came in a cabinet similar to Joust, but thinner. You can buy the Robotron stencils from pr0k on here.

"I see said the blind man."

I see what you mean by the cabinet difference. Pretty obvious now.

True, but the brown make me think that this may have been one of those 'factory-converted' Robo-Jousts (Robotron cab repainted to send out as a Joust). Hard to say for sure....

But I would make it a Robotron. Definitely the iconic Robotron cabinet style.

Seeing the brown makes me think it was a Robotron Joust factory conversion and later converted again.
Hence the black paint.

I am leaning toward a multi-williams.

It took me longer than i expected to get one side sanded down. I am using 60 grit. I may try removing more paint using citristrip before going to the sander.

You don't necessarily need to sand it down to bare wood. Sometimes you can get away with sanding the rough spots, bondoing, sanding and priming.

Yeah, strip the paint, then sand. I always see people trying to actually sand all the paint off and I always think WTF? That's what paint strippers are for.
