Will you play a game if the sound is off or broken?

I love all games having sound. But, every now and then I will come across a game in an arcade that is set really low and I can't hear it. It kinda drives me nuts. HOWEVER, I will say that it really depends on the game.

So for example if it's a Zoo Keeper, that game IMHO is unplayable without sound. When you get the net, it has a warning sound when it's about to go away. No visual clues that it's coming. If you don't hear it and you try to guess when it wears off. You die. Period.

On the other hand, with a game like Pac-man, you can still play without sound because it has visual clues as to when the power pellet is ending by the ghosts flashing. Still better with sound cues; but still playable nonetheless. Not a deal breaker for me on that one.

But overall, I need to hear the sound to enjoy the game. Or to hate it. :p

Found a Rastan, got the crt up and BOOM I was so happy.... wait? no music? it had all kind of wonky sounds and NO MUSIC at all. I would not play it, found the short and in business now but yea, Rastan with no sound no beuno , could prob do without the sound in pengo tho :p

It really depends on the circumstances. If there's a game that I like out in the wild that somehow just still works running in a business, I'll give it a quarter or two just because it's there. If it's in an arcade, I'd probably pass because they should have the resources to fix it. If it's my own game, I'm likely in the process of fixing it, and I'll play it while I'm waiting for parts. I'm an impatient person and I like to play with my new toys, regardless if they're fully functional or not, as long as using them doesn't cause further damage. The games are old as shit and only getting older, I can't always expect perfection, I take what I can get.

Try playing Battlezone without sound. If you can't hear the enemy fire…impossible to do well on that game.

I, too, enjoy the ambiance of game sounds and the music it comes with. Of course, most of us here can relate, you toss a quarter/token into a game when in an arcade, and quickly find out that the sound isn't working. It certainly takes away from the vibe!

I had an experience during the Memorial Day weekend of 2008 when my wife and I met up with several friends at a rental house in Cape Cod. There was an indoor Go-Cart facility next to the house we stayed at, which had a DK and a Ms. Pac standing side by side. I hit the start button on DK, only to have no sound. So, I slid over to Ms. Pac to give it a go. Again, no sound!
So traumatic that you remember it fourteen years later. 😉

Game sounds are one of the main reasons I like certain games: Qix, Defender, Robotron, Joust, etc. Nintendo games have a carnival type sound to them. I'd say sounds/music are 40-60% of game experience so big loss if they're out.
