Will the news of the Asteroids WR have much impact on the hobby ?

Anyone think that this making the news might make people wanna buy an old game or too ?

No ...

Hell, King of Kong didn't see DK's flying off the "shelves"...

Although it did see an increase of popularity. I always talked about how no one cared about DK when I first came to these forums. After KOK, it was all anyone talked about. I cant see people who weren't Asteroids fans prior to this becoming one, though.

If you're wondering if it may have the same impact King of Kong had to people wanting to buy and play DK, then probably not. I don't think you're going to have a rush of people talking about Asteroids WR attempts and trying to get their own machines. Live streaming WR attempts and news articles are unfortunately not as much of an impact as well-known documentary films.

I think the hype around the King of Kong and how it was marketed/presented ("Mitchell v. Wiebe") really drew in a new crowd of fans and gamers including myself. It was just fun to watch and intriguing to say the least. I have always been a Nintendo fanboy and happened across it for free on Netflix. Searched CL the next day for a DK machine and worked out a deal. My arcade hobby journey started right then and there.

Uh... not really.

Where were you during that period? Not only did I sell mine for a premium price and have several others contact me about buying it, I actually saw several local CL want ads looking for DK's. I also saw several new members join here, citing KOK as inspiration for picking up a DK and getting into the hobby. I am not sure what 'flying off the shelves' means to you, but that game certainly saw an increase in popularity and in sales in the year following KOK's release. I still have yet to see the movie.

I saw a few newbs enter (and then exit) the hobby... that's about it. No demand here. No posts asking about DK's. Nothing.

I don't think it will have as big an impact. KOK was seen by people outside of the gaming world and had a chance to draw new people in, or re-kindle their love for DK and arcade games in general.

A live stream on the interenet (which was only seen by those already enamored with video games) and a 2 minute spot on the local news won't have nearly as long of a lasting effect.

Holy shit, how much weed have you smoked?

Show me where DK demand soared...

...you can't.

Sure... a few extra DK's were sold... big deal. There certainly wasn't a run on Donkey Kong cabinets.

Hell, even MJ's death causes a couple Moonwalker cabs to be sold at higher prices, but that's about it.

And to compare a high score being reached viewed by a thousand people to a movie viewed by (i imagine) a hundred thousand people+.... there's a bit of a difference.

And with DK its possible to beat the record if your good , what does it take around 3 hours ?

But who wants to play Asteroids for 3 days straight to try and beat the record ? Very few .

Theres a bunch of guys that got into arcade games on KLOV because of KOK and DK .

I don't think it'll have much impact at all either. The fact that King of Kong was a film about competitive gamers, and a good one, brought a few new people into the hobby. But just a world record attempt? Seems like people already in the hobby will be the ones who care the most. Unless there's a huge media blitz surrounding this... but short of seeing a thread on it here, I haven't seen anything about it in the mainstream media.

I don't think it will make much of an impact.

If you look at the comments posted to the news story in Portland, people were incredulous that this is even considered newsworthy. To many people Asteroids is like the horse and buggy.

Uh, Frizz... One of them posted in this thread.

I still couldn't tell you who...

Bottom line is that sure, it brought a few folks in to the hobby (I did say that in on of my responses above), but it wasn't "huge" by any stretch.

Lets put it another way. MAME has brought MANY MANY more folks in to the arcade collecting fold... yet mentioning that FACT is frowned upon by many here.
