I ordered a song for my juke that's on a 7" record, and when I measured an American 45 it was 6.75".

Are the 2 records interchangeable in an American juke (Seeburg)? I tried finding info out on the interwebs but didn't have much luck.

I also thought I'd read somewhere that the hole size in the middle is different between the 2 record types.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The diameter of the records is the same. The difference is the hole in the middle. American 45's use a large hole, while UK 45's have a small hole, the same size as the one in an LP. So, if your machine is set up to only play large hole 45's, it won't fit. You have to enlarge the hole somehow.

I have a Rock-Ola Princess Royal, that was designed to play both 45's and the small 7" 33's. It has an automatic mechanism for the center spindle, so that when a record with a small hole is lowered onto the turntable, it presses in some tabs that drop the larger spindle down exposing a smaller one. Those tabs flip a little spring loaded cam underneath the turntable and that changes the speed to 33 1/3 RPM. I simply removed that little cam from mine so it plays all records at 45 RPM, but the automatic center spindle still works. So, I can play unmodified UK singles.

Thanks Ian- I have the SMC-1. I'll have to look in the manual to see if it has any kind of setup for UK 45's, but something's telling me the record I ordered is going to end up meeting my dremel. :D

Some places that sell european 45's can 'dink' them when you place your order. That is the term they use for enlarging the hole.

I've been about 90% sucessfull drilling them out with a modified hole saw.
Let me know if interested in the proceedure and I'll try to get some pictures.
