Have a Bally's ProSlot with a code 81 "Battery Voltage Low" error.....seems pretty straight forward just replace the battery on the board. Anything else you guys can think of?

That will solve it.

If you leave it powered on for a while it may charge the battery to the point where the machine will run.

I believe the battery is only needed for memory retention when powered off, but when voltage gets low the machine will not boot, it will give you that error.

I replaced my onboard battery in one of my machines with a switchable remote battery holder with a blocking diode. That way I can change the batteries out, no soldering, if they get low.

Thanks very much.....so in general how long would you say they last???? I like your solution because this is for home use so obviously it isn't going to be on 24/7 ie in Casino.

If you replace the battery with an identical fully charged one it should last a pretty long time. Especially if it gets turned on periodically long enough to fully recharge the battery. I have one machine that I haven't replaced the battery for probably 5 years, and it gets used very infrequently.

Yea, I was thinking the same.
May require a memory clear after battery replacement

Ok thanks guys....how would I know if it need this....I imagine if I'm still getting the same error. Also how do I clear the memory? Thanks.

Ok found the manual and looked through it....I didn't see that I needed a clear chip just a bunch of sequences to preform either a Complete, Full or Partial SAFERAM clear.

If I try to power it up without doing a clear and just swap batteries will this have any negative effect on anything. I installed new battery this morning.

I don't think it will have any negative effect if you try to power up without clearing saferam. It will either work or give an error. If you get an error, then you could perform the clear and things should work fine.

I have already installed the new battery should I attempt to clear the ram first or just power up and see what happens?

I don't think it will harm your machine either way. It is easy enough to do a saferam clear if your machine is anything like mine so I would just do it and then power up normally.

It should have a Lithium battery therefore no charging involved. I replaced mine with a cr2032 but it still needs changing at least once a year. I was going to attempt to use a couple of nvram (battery backed) chips but a little trickery is needed as the motherboard checks the battery voltage on power up. Not sure if this is even possible.

I have one of these machines with the same error. I have went through my manual but it does not tell me how to do a clear ram... can you tell me how you cleared your ram? I would greatly appreciate it.

Ok, from what I understand, some S5500 machines require a RAM clear chip or chips to perform a saferam clear. Mine do not require this, and I hope yours don't either. If you do require clear chips, I can give you the procedure, but getting the chips is up to you. Here is the procedure for machines that don't require clear chips.

There are three types of saferam clear, complete, full, and partial. Complete resets all game meters to zero and sets game options to factory default settings. Full is similar to complete, except that not all bookkeeping meters are cleared. Partial resets electronic bookkeeping meters only, some bookkeeping meters and game options are not affected. I would try the partial first, then a full if that doesn't work, then a complete if that doesn't work.

Here's the procedure:

1. Turn the power off.
2. Open the front door, unlock and remove the MPU board, and move the SAFERAM CLEAR jumper at JW10 to the enable position. On my machine the MPU board slides out and the JW10 jumper location is in the lower right portion of the pcb. The enable position is with a jumper connecting the two pins.
3. Slide the MPU board back into place making sure that the back plugs are firmly seated.

Partial Clear
4. Power up the machine.
5. The message CH P will display on the Win LED. If the clear procedure has been successful, the CH P will be followed by the message CL P on the Win LED. At the same time, the game lights will blink. This is a self check indicating that the clear procedure has been successful. If an error is detected, the CL P will be replaced with E P.
6. If no error was detected, turn the power off, remove the MPU board, move the JW10 jumper to the inactive position (only on one pin), slide the MPU back into place and turn the power on.

Full clear
4. Press and hold the pseudo coin button on the front of the MPU and power up the machine.
5. When the message CH F displays on the Win LED, release the pseudo coin button. If the clear procedure has been successful, the CH F will be followed by the message CL F on the Win LED. At the same time, the game lights will blink. This is a self check indicating that the clear procedure has been successful. If an error is detected, the CL F will be replaced with E F.
6. If no error was detected, turn the power off, remove the MPU board, move the JW10 jumper to the inactive position (only on one pin), slide the MPU back into place and turn the power on.

Complete clear
4. Simultaneouly press and hold the pseudo coin and the Test buttons on the front of the MPU and power up the machine.
5. When the message CH C displays on the Win LED, release the pseudo coin and test buttons. If the clear procedure has been successful, the CH C will be followed by the message CL C on the Win LED. At the same time, the game lights will blink. This is a self check indicating that the clear procedure has been successful. If an error is detected, the CL C will be replaced with E C.
6. If no error was detected, turn the power off, remove the MPU board, move the JW10 jumper to the inactive position (only on one pin), slide the MPU back into place and turn the power on.

Hope this works for you. Let me know how it turns out. I have several manuals for the proslot S5500 if you would like a copy PM me your email and I will forward a pdf.

Some S5500s don't need a ram clear after battery replacement? Never ran into one of those..

I had over twenty S5500s, all required clear chips after battery replacement. These machines will also kill the battery in a year to a year and a half (they suck). I install remote battery setups on these so the battery can be swapped out while the machine is on(without pulling the mpu tray), so ram clear won't be required in the future. I also use a higher mAh "AA" sized 3.6v battery so it lasts longer before it croaks... Search on NLG there is plenty of info about these slots and their battery eating ways....For comparison, an IGT S+ slot's battery can last over 20years..

Fyi, don't let anyone charge you more than $12 for a clear set..

My machines require a ram clear after battery replacement, they don't need clear chips, however. All you have to do is set a jumper as explained above.
