Wii U sold more than 400k units

I was in a small town on black friday (around 1pm) and I saw 3 Wii Us in the electronics section of their wal-mart. Thought about buying one to flip it but I didn't really feel like messing with craigslist/ebay.

Its not sold out. Its just hype.

Agreed. These are not that hard to find. It's all about perception, making people think something is harder to get then it is. Most of the games for the system, you have been able to play on the real systems for months now anyway, no need to be an early adapter. People will buy these, play for a little while and they will sit gathering dust like the Wii does now.

Why are people such Nintendo haters? Ha.

Our Wii gets a ton of play cause we have kids. You know, like when we were all kids and played the fuck out of our Nintendo's?

Same here. The Wii is the center of attention for the fourth year in a row. Especially now, around the holidays. The whole family is together and the party games are king. Things like Wii Party, Mario Kart, and Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments. Cranium Kabooki is also a rare but golden gem when you have enough people to break off into teams.

And I'm not even talking about kids, we are all adults here and we love the Wii.
Personally I'm excited about the WiiU, I haven't had a chance to try the new tablet controller yet, but I am reminded of when the original Wii was announced, everyone thought the Wii-remote design was crazy, and it turned out okay... I expect the same thing to happen here.

It is interesting to note that Nintendo also sold about the same amount of regular Wiis during the same time frame.

They still reign supreme in overall sales. They are smart. They can make it go.

Nintendo's controller designs have been criticized at first all the way back to the N64. After the fact, they are praised (by most, anyway).

I own a Wii so I can complain. I bought it way after launch because I really like Mario Kart and Punchout. Now it rots. This is a very common theme for many where the gimmick has worn off. I played a ton of NES back in the day and loved it, my problem with Nintendo now is that the games never change. They add a gimmick but leave everything else the same. Let's make the disc a mini disc that is smaller for the gamecube, lets make the controller a motion controller, lets make the controller a touchscreen...but the games stay and look the same. Nintendo may be the king of quirky gimmicks, they are always playing catchup with real gaming. Their new system is just as powerful as an Xbox 360 and PS3 which are 7 years old and will be outdated next year with the releases of Sony and MS's new systems. Gamecube to Wii was the same way, no real step up aside from a gimmicky controller and you lose the power and other features at the cost of this. I don't want a gimmick in a gaming system. I don't want game after game that only consists of mini games with characters that have no legs or look like they were designed by a 2 year old. I don't want to play games with my dad or my grandma now, just like I didn't want to play games with them BITD. I want power, performance, fun superior gameplay and online connectivity...and Nintendo seriously lacks that. They are lucky the still have Mario and Zelda (Metroid has pretty much been flushed down the toilet), if those were 3rd party games that could be released on Xbox and PS, they would be in big trouble as all the other games are available on Xbox and PS and they have been historically better on those systems...if they were even available on Nintendo's system at all. Only real reason to buy a Nintendo system now is because of those first party games that you can't get on any other system and that's a shame, because those Nintendo games would be better on other systems.

Depending on where you look for information, the Wii U has sold about 200,000 units less than the Wii in the same timeframe. When you take into perspective that there is no other new "next-gen" system competition for them, that isn't exactly anything to write home about.

Nintendo has basically lost their way when it comes to videogames. I cant speak about business practice because as much as we complain, they're constantly in the black, so that's that. But as far as being a videogame giant like it was back in the NES/SNES days, they've lost their way.

I agree with Les. It's all gimmicks now. "What odd, fucked up thing can we do with our console?" is their mantra. The last great console Nintendo had was the SNES. The last good console they had was the Cube, and even then, it was just ok. The N64 had maybe 3 or 5 actual 'great' games, and they were first party.

Nintendo64: "Lets not go CD and stick with carts even though the CD is what's needed, and ensure that one of our hugest 3rd party developers jumps ship. Make sure the system can't handle a Metroid game either. Also lets make a fucked up controller."
Gamecube: 480p? Who needs that. Stop production of the cable. Internet connectivity? Why? In this day and age the internet is a fad. Lets have like 2 games that do it."
Wii: "lets just throw real controls out the window and allow shovelware back into our console's library, even though we fought against it from the get-go. Also, 480p is ALL anyone needs even though HDTVs are pretty much the norm. Internet, and online gaming? LOL ITS A FAD!! FORGET IT ALREADY!"
Wii U: "OK, so lets make a system that is nearly as powerful as current 7 year old consoles. I guess lets allow a real controller in the mix, but lets make a huge investment on this tablet controller that will probably fail mechanically pretty quickly, especially with the majority of players being 5 years old. (remember people throwing the wiimotes! LULZ). Online, I guess we can have some sort of 2nd rate internet service, but lets not focus on it too much since the net is still a fad."

They've lost their way.

And I've owned every single one of their systems (except the Virtual Boy) and have had great times with all of them.

They haven't lost their way my opinion, they just aren't afraid to innovate; they aren't afraid to try new gaming ideas. You will never see SONY or Microsoft truly innovate and experiment the way Nintendo does. PS Move and Kinect were answers to the Wii, as were XBox360's avatars.

That is why Nintendo is still the best in my view, because they do try new things -- sometimes it pays off and sometimes not, but that's their risk, and it's also their reward. If not for them, motion gaming would still not be in the home I dare say.

Sorry, but WaggleMotion isn't innovative. Unless you call helping a shovelware epidemic, innovative, then it is. I had a Wii and even when I hacked it and could get free games, I just didn't. I ended up selling it because it just wasn't worth the hassle. Back in the NES/SNES days, Nintendo refused to let shovelware pile up on their consoles. That's not to say there weren't any shitty games, of course there were, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it is on the Wii.

Also, refusing to get with the times - even on their newest console - isn't innovative. Refusing a newer technology like the optical disc, HD resolution, internet connectivity and creating a 'last gen' system for the next generation just screams of 'old man who is trying to keep up.'

NOT ONLY THAT, they've introduced (or are going to soon) that new redesigned Wii for $50, that's missing Wifi, GC ports, etc. Right near the time that they've released a newer console. All this is doing is almost guaranteeing lost WiiU sales. The majority of parents who will buy this probably wont be paying attention when their kids tell them they want 'that new wii.' So when they go to walmart/target/whatever and see this new little package for $50, they are going to say "oh thats the new one." and buy it instead of the wiiu.

Nintendo did this with the NES and SNES, they released redesigns, but the NES2 wasn't out until way after the SNES had made it's place in the gaming world. They didn't release the NES2 the same month as the SNES. If they havent lost their WAY, they've lost their general directive.

You have a lot of interesting personal opinions on Nintendo but the numbers show the populace doesn't agree with you. And as they continue to outsell Xbox and PS3, they're hardly the ones that are "Trying to keep up."

They don't have to keep up with the times. That's not what their product is designed to do. It's designed to compete in a market you're not part of.

As I said:

I bought the Wii u last weekend. I only have Nintendo Land and New super Mario Bros U.

Nintendo land is pretty lame and not really worth the $50. But I bought the deluxe package so it was "free".

Mario is awesome as usual. 4 player co-op is a lot of fun. Played for 7 hours yesterday. I too have owned every Nintendo system, even the virtual boy ;)

I heard from a friend here at work that SMB can have a 5th player on the controller and they can help or hinder by adding blocks and such to the level as the game is being played. Sounds like a trip.

Great group console.

I use the Wii the most out of any of my consoles. However, it is used almost exclusively for the Internet and Netflix. I'm typing this now on the Wii; I've got a keyboard hooked up to it. You can't beat the Wii for a cheap PC; I bought it solely for this purpose.

As for games, nothing really appealed to me on the system. The systems that get the most "game time" would be my Neo Geo systems, followed by the N64, NES, PS2. To tell you the truth, this current generation of systems did very little for me. I play my 360 for maybe half an hour every six months. Blech.
