I know they did have some sort of recall on the lasers a while back.
If you were in a certain serial range they would replace the drive free of cost. Mine was mostly working, but starting chugging here and there. I got worried and they replaced the drive and sent it back to me.
Kinda sucky because they wanted me to send the unit and a game...(testing???)
So I sent my Super Smash Bros in the case and my Wii. Wrapped them both up nice in bubblewrap do prevent damage.
WHen I get it back, the Super Smash Bros cash was all sliced up... They must have just used a knife and hacked the bubble wrap off..
They sliced right through the paper and the clear plastic on the case....I was pretty bent.
Also the Wii itself had some nice slice marks, but not as bad as my game case....
So I took all the care to pack it properly, and they got messed up more than if I didn't even pack it probably...
EDIT:
That's right, it was when they released the dual layer discs... Forgot about that. Maybe they will fix still.

RETURNS ALERT FOR SUPER SMASH BROTHERS BRAWL
There is a potential that a very small percentage of customers who bought the new Super Smash Bros. Brawl game will attempt to return it believing it is defective.
THIS IS NOT THE CASE!!
Getting a new game will NOT fix the problem. as it is likely an issue with the Wii console itself.
Please contact Nintendo at support.nintendo.com or call 1-800-255-3700.
Nintendo will be able to take care of any problems you may experience with the game and system.
Frequently asked questions:
1.
Q: Will I have to send in my console to fix the problem?
A: Yes, both the game and the console need to be sent in for repair.
2.
Q: How long will this take?
A: Nintendo is upgrading inbound and outbound shipping to reduce the overall repair time to approximately one week. There is NO cost to the consumer for the repair OR freight.
3.
Q: Why do other games work and not SSBB?
A: SSBB utilizes a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. If there is some contamination on the lens of the console disc drive, it may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc. (no one should attempt to clean the lens themselve
