Hi there!
I have this U5000 that I got with a California Speed game. I did a cap kit I bought from Ian Kellogg a few weeks ago. After the cap kit I found that the monitor comes up and works and looks pretty good, however, if I don't use the game for a few days the picture does not fill the screen horizontally until it warms up. Sometimes it's bad on both sides of the picture, but most of the time it's just on the right side. After about 5 minutes or so it's filling the entire screen. Would a appreciate a little direction with this problem when you have the time.

Thanks.

check your B+ and make sure it is between 117vdc and 118vdc.

if it is not you will have width issues.

Thanks again for your help! I tested the B+ and at startup I'm at 108vdc. And as it warms it never goes higher than 110vdc. I guess the question is now, is it a bad part or should I tackle the B+ pot?

what you need to do, is do the bulb test.

if you have a stable, adjustable B+ for longer than 20 minutes or so using the bulb your good.

if you don't then would suspect something in the PS section.

you need to verify the PS section before replacing parts blindly.

do the bulb test, let it run for a while, adjust the B+ up to 120vdc for a wile then back down to 100vdc for a while to confirm it is holding during your test.
if it drifts more than 2 volts up or down during the test you may have a resister going out of spec, or the B+ pot may have a dead spot in it.

if you're all good with the bulb test, i would suspect something else on the chassis.

do the test and report back.

if you need it looked at, your welcome to send it in.

Thanks. one more question. This might be a stupid one...when I do the test should I leave the neck board connected to the tube? And the test is done from L100 right?

That's two questions! sorry. 😏

Thanks

you can leave the neck board on the tube.

use W159 instead, lift the further pad so you can use an alligator clip on the jumper itself.

don't use a component leg that could break off.

Ok, so I think it's fixed. I did the light bulb test and it held the voltages just fine. So I adjusted the B+ back down to 117vdc and it's been there for hours. The brightness is better the colors are better and everything seems more vibrant than they used to. And more so, as I turned up the voltage the screen got much wider as well. So I adjusted that accordingly too.

Only time will tell for sure, but as I said, I think it's fixed.

thanks again for your help!
