wico 3.5" 8-way leaf arcade shop repro joystick

I just bought one of these joysticks for my dragon's lair, and I am losing my mind. I can't seem to get the E-clip on at all? The plastic switch actuator doesn't seem to go down far enough to attach E-clip? Has anyone else had this problem before with a repro joystick? Is it just me or do I need the Hulk to help me assemble this thing? Thanks
