Why is Pole Position showing me this screen?

It was working fine. I do not have the DIP switches set to free play, and it is giving me the features for the cockpit version. At one point, the game started on free play, and I couldn't steer. Also, it was making the crash noise over and over and when the game ended it said "Push start button," and there is none (maybe another cockpit feature?). Anyway, it stays on this screen for a while and starts up in freeplay with no steering action, even though it's set for coin. Any ideas?

Maybe your Pole Position smoked a joint while you weren't looking? :) But seriously, these PCBs are so badly designed anything could be causing this problem. I parted my Pole Position out because it had water damage and just wasn't worth saving. I hate working on these things.

First I'd take it out of free play and then id take it out of test mode (which is what you are in when you see that screen). You want it set to coin play with autostart. In free play it will just keep starting a new race as soon as the last one is finished, whether anyone is manning the controls or not. Your steering issue could be a bad steering opto board, or it could be CPU related. I'd first try a different opto board.

It's not set to free play... at least I didn't have it set that way. I didn't touch the DIP settings. It was working as 1 coin per credit, and then it started this on me. I will do some re-seating and see if that helps.
