Why hasn't anyone talked about doing a multi MCR Kit???

Think about it. Using a Tron cabinet as the base, you could have:

Tron
Satan's Hollow
Tapper
RootBeer Tapper
Journey

...and probably some others that use the hardware in a vertical monitor orientation that i can't remember off the top of my head.

You would use the fire button on the joystick to shoot or serve beverages in the other games. Any thoughts???

Tapper and Rootbeer Tapper are not vertical....
I'm all for a multi-MCR though!!
Problem is many use, unique controls. Kind of tough to get around that.

Forgot to mention that you can play Satan's Hollow in a Tron cabinet! There is already a ROM hack that exists to allow it to plug and play into a Tron, without making any mods to the wiring/inputs.

I suppose a Tron/Satans Hollow multi would be doable, but would anyone really pony up just for that? I'd suspect it would have to be a bit of a Frankenhack as well, far from plug n play.

I'm sure it could be made plug-n-play, but it would be expensive... more than it would cost to just buy another MCR board, so there's really no point to it. Just because it can be done doesn't mean it should....

It could be plug and play, but you'd have to extend the spacers between the boards in the stack, and it'd require 4 daughter cards, to get rid of the "bend pins out and solder wires" kind of hacking.

I modded SH to run on Tron controls about 4-5 years ago, but decided there wasn't any money to be made making kits...

Don't forget Solar Fox!

Don't forget Solar Fox!

I got to play Solar Fox on a mini machine in an amusement shop a few years ago. Bored me to tears.

Then, last year, I got to play an upright. This time, I survived longer...and, I've gotta say, I found it to be a blast. Really gets the adrenaline going once you're into it.

This is something Clay Cowgill and I discussed many years ago. It is certainly doable when matching vertical or horizontal games, TRON and Satan's Hollow where the two obvious choices, but other games could certainly be added, assuming the controls could be made to work for all.

As far as Journey, isn't it a latter MCR version like Tapper and Timber (MCRIII)? I really wanted this kit, but got tired of waiting and finally found a SH mini (I would like a nicer cabinet and parts... anyone???).

I built myself a Tron/SH multi by swapping roms to 27128s and adding a socket and bending out the extra address line and switching it, using the SH in a Tron cab hack thats out there. It works fine, but honestly, its not pretty, and was a PITA to do.
Honestly though, no one other than nerds like me have even ever heard of Satan's Hollow. Good thing i did it for my own enjoyment, because everyone else just kinda stares at me blankly when i show it to them.

And before i get 10 pms wanting one, its not something i'm really interested in doing for others, unless your really willing to dig deep.

Edit - before someone complains, the ssio was converted to 2764's, not 128's.

I know MAME gets hate here, but I think it would be nice if you just want to do this.

It runs all of those games perfectly. It can handle the orientation no problem, as long as you don't mind a cropped image. I run a 27" monitor vertically so the vert games are big, but horizontal games are about the size they'd be on a 19".

Spy Hunter is probably the one screwball that wouldn't be without the right controls. I played it with the spinner and it works, but I wouldn't call it fun.

Kickman WOULD work pretty decent in my opinion. You would use the spinner knob to move back and fourth and the trigger on the joystick to "kick". Of course, nothing beats playing an original game in the original cabinet with the original controls. What got me thinking about this in the first place was the attract sound mod that people have been talking about that works the same for both Satans Hollow and Tron. Personally, i don't care for Satans Hollow, but thought it might be an idea of interest since a number of people seem to get excited about it when they "score" a cabinet.

As for the tapper games, i thought that they were vertical, although the only one that have is in my Ultracade and doesn't get any love. Given the "up and down" nature of the controls and serving drinks in the game, you would think that it would be a vertical orientation. Certainly, Journey would be a big attraction (if Possible) but would almost certainly NOT support the external music player UNLESS the developer worked with RikkiTikki to implement support for his solid State option that he has been working on. It never hurts to think out loud like this, because you never know who may be listening and what turns up eventually...
