Why don't people finish console games?

I think it's more the lack of games that are continuously engrossing.

They're more like today's crap spewn out of Hollywood, where the trailers make you go "Woah!"...but then when you see it, you realize that the trailer is pieces of the ONLY good shit in the movie and sometimes stuff that isn't even in the movie!

Maybe 1 in 20 games has me wanting to continue playing, most it's like a chore to even be bothered.

For me it is definitely a time issue. I'd love to play RPGs, for example but I just can't commit to that much time.

I'm starting to go back to more "basic" games that I can play for 20-30 minute sessions and still feel satisfied.

Most games have really terible narratives, and on top of that I can't always easily go back and refresh myself on what happened the last time I played, unlike a book where I can reread chapters.

I really like LONG RPG console games, but a lot of times Real Life (TM) intrudes and I get off of it for a few weeks. Then I sometimes have a hard time remembering where I was and what I was supposed to be doing next. Eventually, other things steal time away from me and I never get around to finishing.

I've found I'll go back to these things - like Final Fantasy VII - and restart them from the beginning. But then the cycle viciously repeats itself...

I must be an exception to the rule. I still finish about 85 - 90% of the main storyline of games I start playing. That last 10 - 15% is made up of stuff that truly sucks, is puzzle stuff where I get screwed because of my partial color-blindness, or just ramps way too far in terms of difficulty.

The only adventure game I have never officially finished (that I started with the intention of finishing) was Oddworld for the PS1. I got to the end stage, where the time bomb gets set, but the level is so damned hard I never made it all the way out after 5+ tries. Damn, I quit playing that game like 14 years ago already.

I think its because there are so many games to choose from. When I get stuck on a game, I'll go and play something else. I might not even get back to trying that one I was stuck on, or maybe I will after a year.

Imma say boredom and deep stories. I love the ff series but never finished 13 and it was one I really looked forward to. I played about 15 hours I think but ended up trading the game in. I know I'll never pick up where I stopped cause honestly I don't even remember the character names? Lol I stopped cause it was pretty linear in the beginning. I hear after about 25 hours the world opens up and the game changes so much but I never got to that point. I need something to keep me busy the whole time like oblivion and fallout and ff7, 8,9, 10. They all had me doing extra stuff the whole game that it kept me interested.

They need more 1 sitters... Games that you can beat in one or two sitting.. Take Resident Evil for instance.. It's not a long game at all but it's still considered a great game. It's the perfect length for todays busy and short attention span society IMO. I think COD Modern Warfare did a good job in following that same idea. Make a short and sweet single player game that makes you want to play through again without dreading a 30+ hour trek. Those are the kind of games I look for. If I know a game is long I won't touch it cause I know I'll just get bored with it. I've changed with age and there will never be a game that can hold me for that long anymore. I'm 37 yrs old so maybe it's just an age thing for me. IDK..

I still play about 90% of my games all the way through. It's a mix of first person shooters, puzzle games, and RPGs. I have nothing but time so I enjoy the long games. That's the thing about a nerve disorder...I can't walk for long or very well but I can play games all day every day.

I've done that exact thing on so many games, mostly RPGs as well. I think I restarted Windwaker about 3 times before I finally finished it. I've done that with Metroid Prime more times than that and still haven't finished it.

While I worked at Game Crazy people would always complain about shorter games.

When God of War 3 came out, people played it and said it was amazing, but too short.

Developers are focusing more on multiplayer.

I think the article kind of contradicts itself when it says that gamers have less time to play, but will dump hundreds of hours in to multiplayer.

I've never been in to multiplayer. Out of everyone who worked at the store, I was the only one who would spend 70 hours on Fallout, but never really touch Call of Duty.

There's just too many games out there. I like playing RPGs,but I don't have as much time as I used to,but I'll still play them when I can. I do like the shorter games as well though.

I have never been into multi-player though. Like I want to hear droves of people constantly say "wtf?!" on XBox Live or the PSN after their character is killed because that's pretty much all you hear. "I died?! Wtf?!" Yeah buddy, like it's such a surprise that you were killed because you're clearly the greatest player ever to wield a controller.

As a kid I could never get past he Grim Reaper in Castelvania, or get to the last boss in Blaster Master. When I turned 20 I went to a Game Stop bought a NES deck and those two games and 20 hours later had both beat.

Those were the only two I coulnd't beat as a kid and to this day they are two of my all time favorites.

Games today suck, more graphics then gameplay...at least that is my opinion.

I'd have to go with multiplayer personally, it's a lot more addictive knowing you can get on for 5-10 minute matches rather than getting stuck for an hour on some quest. It also feels more competitive and unpredictable to go up against real players rather than playing against a computer, and people don't seem to abuse the mic much at all anymore, if they do you can always just mute them.

Even multiplayer requires ten hours of practice if you don't want to get killed in the first five seconds of play.

At least with a decent single player story that kind of time sink will reward you with perhaps a new perspective or idea.

It is too much of a commitment these days. I can rarely justify sitting on the couch for that many hours. I played through Fable 2 back in January, but I left a lot of the side quests unfinished because it was just taking too much time. The only newer game I play regularly is Angry Birds, and that is just because I can play for a couple of minutes when I have time.

The last boss fight on Blaster Master was a bitch. It took more than a couple of tries to kill that guy.

That is the problem with a lot of games now. Its all about graphics and being able to play on line.

I finish most games I start, I finish. Unless they make them almost impossible to finish. I never finished Sub-Terrania, but that's because its damn hard and you are only given a few lives then you have to start completely over. No saves.

I also finished Sewer Shark and Night Trap as well as most of the other Sega CD games I bought. They were too expensive not to finish.

My time is spread among many hobbies and responsibilities. I have a few titles I have started but not finished like Windwaker, Epic Mickey, Mass Effect 2, Mario Sunshine and many others. Once I get my arcade game projects under control (i.e. stop buying them and finish what I have) I plan on getting back into console gaming. At least that hobby is affordable :)
