Why does my ST:TNG have two sensors on each of the flipper buttons?

It triggers at two different points of pressing the button. One when you first start pressing it, and the other at almost the bottom of the button press. How is this used in the game's software? I suppose it could be used to measure how fast the button is pressed...

IDK.

It's a standardized board style, also used in boards with multiple flippers. One sensor does the lower flipper on that side, the other sensor does the upper flipper. Because they trigger at different times, you can hold the lower flipper while working the upper flipper independently.

Wow! I didn't know that! I need to try that out tonight!

In general, you can put a pin into switch test mode, check the numbers of the switches being triggered (for the flipper buttons or anything else), and then look up the switch functions in the manual.

Like the switch matrix, due to a standard architechture designed for all kinds of games, Lots of stuff on the ddriver board isnt even used on sttng also. Believe there is at least a few solenoid drivers open as well as a 4th flipper driver.
