I was hoping that maybe a KLOV member could help me understand why my Joust 2 looks different from all of the other Joust 2's I see in pictures. I have actually never seen another Joust 2 in person and noted that the sideart on my Joust 2 looks different from every cabinet I see in pictures.

The biggest difference is that my Joust 2 has the same artwork on the side that Williams Inferno had on it (the Williams logo busting through the wood) and not the bird sides I see in pictures.

At first I thought it might be a converted Inferno cabinet but it has the same serial number and the Williams tags all over the cabinet. Not sure what to make of it. I would appreciate any guidance if someone knows why their were two versions of the cabinet.

Much thanks - Pics below. D44

Somebody painted over worn side art ?

My guess would be that it is one of the last ones of the assembly line. Somebody orders a Joust 2, they grab a cab and put one together......

Yeah, I was thinking the, "We gotta slap one of these together and are out of side art" theory as well. Or they grabbed a whole cab, with the art already on it.

Still, an interesting piece. Gotta love arcade mysteries.

Thanks for the help and theories. It is just very odd. I can say, that this is the original paint work but it could have just been a mix-up on the assembly line. I have not seen any cab other that Inferno (only in pictures) to have that Williams logo artwork. Hmm... To be continued

I think the only game to use that side art was inferno. since it was an '84 game(and horizontal), and joust 2 is an '86 game(and vertical), its not likely it was a test cab.

Most likely the art got damaged at the factory and they stickered it there or someone bought the sticker and applied it to their cab. I would say look at your cab in good light and see if you can detect normal joust 2 art under it, but it looks like its not painted very well(paint looks thin).

Thanks for the reply. There is definitly no artwork on the cabinet other than the Williams logo. The cab came from AZ and I think the dry air dried out the wood and paint on the sides - giving that thin peeling look.

I talked to the gentleman I purchased the cab from and he said that it was one of the prototypes for Joust 2 and that it was made before they finalized the Joust 2 Sidearm (so they put Inferno artwork on in the meantime). I asked if he had any proof and he said only if someone can research the serial number on the cabinet - but he was always told it was a proto. You think he would have told me that when I purchased it .....

I wonder if the serial number would indicate it was an early release of the cabinet?

Hmm....again

I thought that looked familiar....if that came from Paradise Valley, good score and a great seller of good stuff!

I always thought Williams was pretty good at marking their prototypes and yours doesn't seem to be marked. It also appears to have a later serial number then someone else on the registry.

Cool cab

Clearly not a prototype or the last one.

Our list shows at least 1 so far with a lower number.
The dates were on a tag at the outside bottom on the back. Generally destroyed.

The prototype had Masonite nailed to the side of the cab because they were testing different color schemes.

I bought the prototype from John Newcomer the developer.
All the ROMs have hand written tags on them.

And no tag with a serial number.

If you blow up the pictures you might be able to see the lip of Masonite where it joins to the normal cab

The paint ?
My guess a complete repaint and the decal went on because they didn't have a stencil .

I had one of these back in the early 2000s.
I think people where calling them the "exploding art" or "exploding rock" version.
Not a proto. Seen several of them around.

That Joust 2 the op posted is a really nice piece. I had a sinistar style empty duramold for a while (one W on the right side of the Williams sign in the front, and not a W on the left side like how blaster is) and it had an XP (wms experimental) tag on it, but it also had the same serial number (xp 167 I think it said) etched/scratched into the bottom inside of the plastic cabinet. Unfortunately it was really beat up and even had some holes cut out of the backdoor.

Great thread.

History and facts are one of the reasons we started the Registries.
It also allows a section for history of each machine.
