Why does Handeling my Mk boards sound like breaking glass?

When I pick up some of my Mk boards they sound like shards of glass breaking. Whats up with that? What am I hearing?

MK2, with expansion board? ;)

if so, it's just the part where the expansion board connects. the boards tend to warp from years of use, so that contributes to it. kind of a pain, cause after transporting my MK2 board I typically have to reseat roms and the expansion board, or else I get weird POST errors (CUSTOM CHIP BAD?????)

You are probably hearing the socketed chips popping they tend to do that when the board is flexed a little, or a lot.

yeah, I was kind of alluding to this. like I said, the boards tend to kind of warp, depending on where they've been, which will make the socketed chips make all kinds of agonizing sounds.

There are a number of boards that do this when flexed. Some sockets also let th legs "creep" a little on repeated heating and cooling (like powering on, playing for a while and then power down) and peiodically you need to reseat the chips that have creeped. My Battlezone is like that. Once a year I press all the chips down on all the boards. Still kicking after 27 or 28 years.
