I love almost every Taito game from the 80's and 90's but Bubble Bobble is not one of them. I find it highly boring. Am I missing something? I can only tolerate to play about 3 levels before I play something else. I absolutely love Puzzle Bobble (Bust-A-Move) but not Bubble Bobble.

If you do love it -- why?????

It's extremely addictive, I think. My wife and I love playing it together. If you're not just hammering the credit button on free play, it's quite a bit of fun. We limit ourselves to 5 credits max, and it makes it keep its edge.

Oh yeah, and that music is great.

I love Bubble Bobble. I hate people that mess with capitalization in thread titles.

:D

But seriously, I find it a very good game. I never played it in the arcade, but I played it endlessly on the Nintendo. I've actually beaten the game too. The first couple levels are pretty easy, then it gets really hard. There are powerups too, allowing you to shoot bubble faster, and run faster, etc. To get letters to appear, as well as bonus points, trap several enemies in the bubbles and pop them all at once.

+1.....but at least Retro didn't add OMGWTFBBQ prior to everything.

BB is entirely the music but the 'cute' gameplay albeit repetitive as hell. Two player simultaneous is the only way to play it.

It's kind of fun for a while. If you get the sneaker, you speed up. There's a couple of different candies that give you rapid fire bubbles or long range bubbles. It's kind of fun when you can do that. There's also random prizes that float down that are worth 10's of thousands of points. It's kinda cool when that happens.

But, yeah, I mostly play it with my kids. Not sure if I'd like it much if I played it all by myself. I don't know if it ever ends. Several levels in it shows you some girl(s) you're supposed to be saving, I guess.

Everyone seems to have a game that is liked by many that they do not like. For me, that is Toobin. I remember playing it once when it came out in 1988, and I'm still pissed that I wasted 25 cents on that stupid game.

As far as Bubble Bobble, it's a bit over the top on the 'cute' crap, but I love playing it, it's a simple concept that's difficult to master.

If Ian likes it then I had better give it another chance! I think the real thing is that I never played it with a second player. I didn't realize there were powerups, is there a boss?

Also Ian I got that suicided Buster Bros board in the mail yesterday, so we need to get together and burn those ROMs! :) Looks like that DK monitor will need to be rejuvenated too, the green and blue guns are flakey now.

This is one of my all-time favorite games for the following reasons:

Music: Catchy, memorable and hypnotic as someone mentioned.

Co-op Play: Really fun. Fighting for kill prizes/bonus letters, helping each other around the stages, etc.

Nostalgic Value: I remember playing this BITD in both local arcades as well as when I took summer trips to S. Korea. My older brother and I would drop a lot of coins to beat it. Though in Korea, you'd get 10 coins per "dollar".

Cute Factor: Appeals to women and children. My wife likes this game because it's simple, cute and, again, the music is catchy. She's not a gamer.

Legacy: There were Taito games that came before it, but this really set the stage for a franchise for Taito/SquareEnix which included all of the sequels (Bubble Symphony is another great one) and Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move (we all know how popular that became).

For kicks, here's a Korean ramen commercial that even used the song:

Women love it. Nuff said?

It's my wife's favorite game, and many of her friends play it when we have a game night. They're sad I swapped the board out with an Arcade Shop multi-board over a year ago -- they like it that much; so I have to get another cab for that soon.

It's a good co-operative 2 player game and there aren't many of them out there, let alone keep your attention through all of the variations in levels and co-operative help needed to win.

My wife loves Buster Bros (I just picked it up), I will have to see if she likes Bubble Bobble.

mmm i could go for some Ramen after watching that vid....

oh yea bubble bobble, I hated that game when it first came out for NES, after giving it some time it really is addictive, damn song can be annoying after 3-4 hours of game play tho.

Hehe. Yeah - definitely worth another try. I think once you get in to it, you'll have fun with it. There are powerups - candies that make you shoot bubbles faster, and sneakers that allow you to run faster. There are also special bubbles that shoot lightning bolts to the sides to kill enemies, and bubbles full of water which propel you though the board, killing enemies along the way. There is a boss at the end (and it's quite difficult!).

Cool! Yeah, give me a call and we'll get that all fixed up!

It's the frakin' music. After about 20 minutes of playing it I end up with that aggressively cheerful tune stuck in my head for days. That's why I've converted 3 of the 4 Jousts that I bought as Bubble Bobble cabs back into Jousts. I keep the 4th one in storage and just bring it out for parties.

Another similar, and equally addicting game is "Rainbow Islands". I don't know if there was an arcade port, but it's great on the Nintendo.

I was going to buy a Bubble Bobble thinking it will play like Puzzle Bubble. It had the same art goofy characters from Puzzle Bubble. Im glad the other guy bought it behind my back. Bad game.
