Why do people collect side scrolling beat them ups like tmnt

I'm not a big beat em up guy, but I do get the appeal. Like others have said, it eventually becomes "how far can I get on one credit?" just like SHMUPs do. Constantly trying to up your score, to get just a little bit further before Game Over... I mean, you COULD just pump coins into it and keep playing until you beat it/it gets boring, but the same could be said for every arcade game ever with continue options, even classics. The only difference is you actually get an endgame to brawlers instead of repeating patterns and eventually a kill screen. (I far prefer classics, and don't really intend to ever own a beat em up aside from what I have on the Neo Geo multi, but... just saying)

When I had Crime Fighters it sat most of the time after I beat it a few times. It always got played at parties and after a while I gave myself a credit limit and saw how far I could get

No Ghosts N Goblins you can put a 1000 credits in it and still not beat the damn thing. Karnov is not as hard but still you can't just throw credits at it to guarantee you will beat it.

I guess the social aspect is the consensus favorite on why these are collectible. I enjoy social games like Street Fighter, Joust and Killer Instinct...mainly because I like trying to kick ass. Doesn't always go my way but I enjoy them either way.

My biggest issue with keeping these titles is I can either have a pcb worth $400 that I don't enjoy or I can use the $ towards games I do. To each there own.

Lol I have a love hate with both G&Gs. The $1000 in coins is right, that's what I don't like about it because it's nearly impossible, I want some sort of assurance that I can do well or beat a game without needing to set it to freeplay. However, no other game has me yelling $hit-fuc# as often as that game. Just collected green armor or a flaming axe?...Nope you got hit by a random flying thing that appeared out of thin air. Good thing when you jump you'll land back on the ground...NOPE because it's always over a water pit and you'll fall right into it because an enemy goes el-cheapo on you.
I do love the game though, I just hate it.

Exactly! I didn't play this much as a kid until I got the NES version. Took me all damn weekend to beat it, played it about 30 hours straight. The timing has to be perfect and you can't just run through it like a lot of other games. People are talking about beating a game on single credit...I would pay to see someone do it on this game.

If it didn't restart you from a checkpoint everytime you died I'd feel much better about the game, especially during a boss fight. I appreciate a good challenge but holy cow, I feel my blood pressure going up already just talking about it, and yet at the same time I feel the need to play it.

I got it for the NES back when it was new. I couldn't get very far, maybe 2nd level? I always felt like it was way too hard. I did actually beat Kung Fu, Trojan, and Kid Niki though..

All games are repetitive and all games can get boring after a while its all about what kind of repetitive the player likes to spend his/her time playing. If a game never got boring then we wouldn't have had any reason to make new ones and would still be playing Pong and Computer Space clones. (mic drop)

TMNT, Simpsons, X-Men: all socially relevant still. The cartoon based graphics have held up very well too. A kid sees that game and he /she wants to check it out. It's also a good party game for the casual gamer. I think that's why the value on these are higher than say your other beat 'em ups like Cowboys Moo Mesa. It'll also likely be chosen by the casual gamer over most of the games collectors desire. Sorry Quantum and Major Havoc owners. :D

This is why games like Missile Command, Centipede, and Asteroids Deluxe are my favorite games. No continues, no ending, easy to learn but hard to master, with timeless and addicting gameplay that you can continue to chase high scores for pretty much ever. This is also why I hate games like R-Type LEO and got rid of it right away- you can win the game with no effort just by pumping in credits because there's not even check points and unlimited continues.

But doesn't the score reset after you die and put in a new credit ?

Other than nostalgia why would anyone want to buy these games/boards? To me once you go through the game and it is over why would you ever want to play it again?

I am mainly talking about games like TMNT, SIMPSONS, FINAL FIGHT, DOUBLE DRAGON, ROBOCOP, REAL GHOSTBUSTERS...any game that if you put enough credits on it you can go through the levels no issue. To me games like GHOSTS N' GOBLINS, KARNOV, PITFALL...are challenging and you have to use some sort of skill to beat and are worthy of keeping playing.

as for skill ive seen some folks play incredible games on double dragon and final fight.
another huge reason is KIDS. If you have them or have friends and family that do they are an undeniable attraction to most young ones under 18.
and for what may seem to be the least important reason for some is the fact that these games and boards right know (specifically konami) are worth good money and are excellent trade bait.

Thanks
Blake

I agree there is challenge there if you limit credits. I do this all the time on my best em up games unless other people are playing and they simply want to see the ending. A few days ago I finally beat the Royal Rumble mode on Wrestlefest with one credit and eliminated all 11 opponents. It's more satisfying than just adding credits until you win but the nostalgia keeps me playing as well.
