Why do games like NFL Blitz that use hard drives also still have batteries on the pcb's? Were the Midway employees unclear as to the purpose of hard drives? They were just really nostalgic?

Hard drives in arcade games are used to hold all of the game's assets and first used on Killer Instinct as a way to hold more game data than ROMs of the day could hold. The reason they also have batteries were to save the game settings and operate the real-time clock. Not all hard drives were solely read from. For example, Golden Tee Fore saves the game settings on the hard drive.
