Hi all. I just added my 3rd pin to the stable...a WCS94. It wasnt a game i ever wanted or even played but when it came up for sale cheap (got it for $600...see thread for story and pictures here: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=246141 ) I bought it with the thoughts of shopping it and selling it for a Jurrasic Park a game ive always wanted mainly cause i love the movies...not so much the game play. Now that i have it and have played quite a few games i LOVE it...i still hate soccer but love this pin! So why do you guys pick the pins you have? for the theme (like i am with Jurrasic Park) for the game play or simply for the price?

i've always been more of a theme guy than anything else. that said, if a pin's gameplay lures me in, i'm there regardless of theme.

the only pin i currently own that i don't care for the theme is my starship troopers...i keep it around though because i have yet to conquer the damn thing. i'm not the greatest pin player in the world...i'm pretty average...but i absolutely SUCK at that thing. i probably won't let it go until i get to where i can beat it up pretty regularly. lol.

I've read over and over that WCS is a great game that transcends a flimsy theme. I'm very partial to Williams System 9 and 11 stuff because that is the era that I really spent a lot of time in the arcades. Pinbot and Taxi were my two Must Haves and now that I got them both, I'm looking at some newer stuff.

I've enjoyed enough games where I hated the theme (Soprano's, Baywatch) to try and give anything a fair chance. There are only a few that I hate the theme so much I'd never want them... Shaq (any basketball, yech) Shrek, Flinstones. Everything else gets a fair shake!

It sure as hell isn't the price, haha.

I by mainly on theme. I've only sold 2 pins and that was recently to help pay for a new pin. A FT and a TS, the TS was essentially a basket case and I had no time to work on it. I might try and find another FT eventually, it's a simple fun game, but it wasn't like I was beating it regularly or anything.

Mostly theme here.
I wonder if the answer to this question depends on how much of a pinhead a person is. I don't play my pins every day, or even every month sometimes. If I played more regularly I could see a point where the theme wouldn't be enough to keep the pin interesting and I'd want one with a deeper rule set.

lol, if that was me i'd sell that thing to teach it a lesson...hehe.

For me, i buy on looks. Game play is a very close second but lets face it, the first thing you see is the art and that's what draws me to a game.

And that is my point for starting this thread. I honestly HATE soccer and while i LOVE the game play im not liking the overall looks of WCS94. To me JP may not be a better game or maybe not even as good as WCS but just walking by and seeing that Dinosaur and the Jurrasic Park logo would make me happy even if i dont play it that much. So, who knows how long WCS94 will be on my list of current pins

file this away in the FWIW category....but....

i was in the same boat. LOVED the JP theme. thought i loved the gameplay. but that thing grew stale faster than any pin i've owned. i sold it and have not regretted it a single moment.

then again, i got rid of my whitewater relatively quickly as well for the same reasons......and some folks would kill for that pin. lol.

it's all subjective. that's why i try not to bang on anyone's pin lineup....what works for some might not work for others. hell, i love my gilligan's island pin if that tells you anything. ;)

Some of each, but mostly theme. I am no real pinhead so as long as I have fun with my pins I'm good.

Roller Coaster Tycoon. - My first pin. I love rollercoasters and theme parks so this was perfect for me. The price was good as well.

Revenge From Mars. - Price was the reason to buy. I really do like the theme and it's fun to play.

Mars Trek - A little them, a little price, I wanted an em and this one is in great shape that I like to play.

Jurassic Park - Theme for sure. I do like the game what little I've played it so far. I really like the look of the machine.

Theme and gameplay both have to be there for me, but theme is definitely the biggest factor. It's what draws me in. If I don't dig a theme, I just can't get into the game- no matter how good the gameplay may be.

I currently own Monster Bash, Tron, and Pirates of the Caribbean. I love all three themes (though I also dig the gameplay). The next game I plan to get is Bram Stoker's Dracula. i'm a sucker for horror themes (and I've owned a BSD in the past- the gameplay is great).

High Speed, Pinbot, and STTNG are must haves for me since those were the main ones I played in arcades. I like the themes, but also enjoy the gameplay.

I would have thought theme would be the deciding factor for me until CAX this year. I love the X-Men theme, and just assumed I would like the game. I didn't. It may be better when you spend more time with it, but I definitely didn't enjoy it enough to stand in line after the 2nd time I played it. I am not a Transformers fan, but I really enjoyed playing that pin. Except for STTNG, it was probably the most fun I have had playing pinball. I will definitely be trying out other pins after playing that. I only played it because it was close to X-Men, and now I may buy one someday.
