Just picked up a Max Hangtime PCB to swap into my NBA Jam cab, and the volume control for Max HT is in the menu option. My issue? When you push the button to go into "control volume" it flashes to the screen really quick, and then right back out into the menu? The game is so fucking loud I wont ever be able to play it. Am I missing something? I know the Jam PCBs used a sound board and there is a volume knob to control the volume inside the coin door. Max HT has the sound on the main PCB, but there is no knob to adjust it. Am I screwed?

Hmm. Is there a dip switch for volume control?

Try selecting volume from the menu and keep holding the button down. Maybe the button is wired wrong and its registering you hitting the button again when you release it.

Edit: Go to the switch test and make sure you don't have any stuck or "normally closed" switches.

The switches tests all check out OK. I thought the same thing. Nothing is stuck.

The only thing that isn't hooked up is the 3P and 4P harness. I don't think that would matter though, yeah?

Did you test the joystick switches too? I believe you adjust the volume up and down with the joystick when you're in the menus.

Re-seat the JAMMA connector while you're at it.

Yeah, the 1P and 2P sticks were all fine. I cant stay on the volume screen though is the problem. It automatically backs out?

Try reseting the bookeeping and go to volume control again.
If this doesn´t work, some old machines used a hi current potentiometer connected in serial with the speaker, you could do that, these are arround 100 ohm and you should open one of the wires of the speaker and alternate the pot in one point and the middle pin. Of course you could also alternate an ordinary 5K pot in the input of the audio amplifier but it is not so easy to do. Regards

So, just in case anyone else runs into this problem...

Open the test switch, scroll down to volume control and highlight it, before pressing the button to go into the volume control close the test switch. Then press the button to enter the volume control. The test menu stays up, and you can adjust the volume that way. Weird, but it works.

How is the test switch wired in your cab? With a momentary switch, or with a toggle? Perhaps yours is rigged with a toggle switch and that game is really only looking for a momentary switch signal to enter test mode.

Hangtime is usually a momentary switch..... hence why his board might have kept thinking a button was being pushed, exiting the menu.

if it's in a NBA Jam cab it's not momentary, it's a ON/OFF style switch mounted on top of the coin box. I think my buddies was doing this also and yea turning the switch back to off i believe did fix the issue also :D .

Glad to hear you figured it out too, great game. What's your win streak up to? a friend and i went 73:7, i believe it stops keeping track after 63-64 wins in a row tho >.< , we started new characters and are currently 56:0 on the Hardest setting ( IT'S GOTTA BE THE SHOES! )

Right.... the NBA Jam cabinet he is using has a toggle switch....the NBA Hangtime pcb which is what he was testing uses a momentary switch to get into the service/test menus.
So basically Hangtime in that cabinet was acting as if there was a stuck switch, causing it to exit the menu automatically.

Right, but nothing was showing that on the switch tests, so I had no clue which switch it thought was open, ya know?
