Why are people so incompetent/lazy with JAMMA wiring?

Bad wiring is somewhat of a pet peeve, but I also kind of like it -- it's a nice opportunity to redo it neatly, cleanly, and exactly how you want it. This is good for me since I enjoy rewiring and putting together my own harnesses. It's kind of a relaxing process for me once I get in the zone. Unlike IJTFC though, I like Molex (for my control panels at the very least).

the pole position cockpit i picked up a few weeks ago has all the wires soldered to the board at the edge connector. it works so im not touching it till something happens, which shouldn't be too long since it is a pole position.
Kinda reminds me of my Red Baron cockpit. Someone (at Cedar Point more than likely since that's where it was on location for years) had soldered power and ground wires right to the damn board and did some other jumper hacks between wires. It worked when I first got it, but it began to develop problems that were ultimately caused by bad solder on the pins that connect the 2 boards. The problem was with the way it had been hacked it wasn't plug n play so I had to undo their handy work anyway.

It's also fun to look at electrical tape on wires and guess if you think it's been soldered or not hehe.

Many hacks were a result of operators being in a hurry to get the games back up and running. Later hacks were a result of owners not knowing how to get the parts to replace things properly so they just soldered wires to boards since solder and irons can be purchased at Radio Shack, Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

i can completely see that. not only that, but all the people that buy the cheap premade caca harnesses just plug them in, and then you have random lengths of wire lying around, not to mention the poorly made harness that will eventually be poorly repaired by said person.

i prefer bob's harnesses. it can take a while to put them together with all the pin crimping, cutting wires to the right lengths, and what not, but they look very clean and nice when they're done.

On a related note, I'm irritated to get a Jamma extended from jammaboards.com that isn't fully populated. If I wanted to make it myself, I would have done that in the first place.

I got some of those and they were pretty dreadful. I returned them promptly.
