Whoever pioneered the oven trick to remove a CPO, thank you!

Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Put control panel in for 2 to 3 minutes. Watch the CPO peel off! So easy. Just be sure to use old rags for oven mits so you don't burn your fingers and so you don't ruin the good ones. The thing gets sticky.

Do you peel while it is still hot or wait until it cools down?

I just pulled it out of the oven and started peeling it while it was hot. Came right off. The metal was sticky with the glue after. I had heard that brake cleaner would take that off and I had some so I tried it. Might be just this particular brand of glue but it just made it gummier.

So I tried WD-40 which I also heard worked and it cleaned it right off. I washed it off with water after and it looks great. I'll wipe it down with alcohol before applying the new CPO to ensure that the residue is all gone.

The metal doesn't get warped or anything?

It' not in there long enough to do anything but soften the glue. I wouldn't leave it in much longer than that or it might actually start to burn the materials which would stink the house up and possibly emit toxic fumes.

I had it in there for 2 minutes. Nothing singed or anything. Just loosened it up enough to peel off.

Poor Tapper... why are you removing that CPO? Converting it to Street Fighter II? ;)

Best trick ever I have been using it for awhile now. The only thing that sucks is when the control panel wont fit in the oven.

Would it kill you to use a little Easy Off in that oven?

Almost as bad as welove80's bathtub.......:p

John, I have a really nice heat gun with 2 different heat settings that you can borrow?I use it all the time to remove side art and what not. Hate to see you put that in your oven not knowing what type of toxins or whatever may lurk on that control panel.

Thank you sir. I may take you up on that if I'm taking off side art. But really the thing is in the oven for only a couple minutes. Not enough to cook it...no smoke, nothing. Barely enough time to soften up the glue. No smell at all even. I'm pretty confident that it's safe.

You should be safe as long as you didn't put the Sundance CP in the oven... you know, because of the meth. ;)

I agree, I would not want that where my food goes. I just use a heat gun, razor and some paint thinner to remove the glue. Works great! Disapointed that you didn't. Convert it to Sundance though.

heat gun works just as good and does not pollute your oven with poison

heat gun works just as good and does not pollute your oven with poison

Actually being someone who has removed a cpo with a heat gun, many different chemicals, wire brush attachment on a drill, sander and an oven I can say without a doubt that the oven works 100 times better than the best heat gun. As for all the fear of toxins, I guess folks are still afraid of the boogie man too. As long as you're not licking the sides of your oven or scraping off oven wall residue to put in your food I'm sure you"ll be fine. Honestly I'd be extremely surprised if there are any toxins at all produced during this process. Like John said when done right the cp is not in the oven long enough to melt anything other than the adhesive because it's the first thing touching the metal cpo which is basically what is being heated.

BTW I'm glad someone finally decided this was a good idea after two years of posts saying people need to try this. At least the number of naysayers has decreased.

It's interesting to me that people would be so concerned about 2 minutes in the oven being a health hazard of some sort.

Do you ever drive down the freeway with your window partly open? Ever been to a rock concert, bar or casino? Have you worked on your car in your garage? The amount of chemicals you inhale in any of those places is going to dwarf anything that is coming off the control panel after barely heating it up like this.

I guess I just like to live on the edge. Later I'm going to put some non-tempered glass on my Pinball game just because that's the kinda guy I am. The babes go for wild men like me!
