It may sound silly, but I refused to play this game until I restored it. I never played it back in the day, I didn't play it at Gorfchampion's when I was there in October (what would be the point?) and I really only fired the one I am restoring up to see if the lights in the stick worked, and to see that the rank lights chased each other in test mode (and that's when I first bought it back in July). Today, I got the machine nearly back together and decided to fire it up, test everything out and make sure everything still works. Now, the lights still don't work in the stick (new bulbs installed - still no go), but I was able to play through 1 and a half rounds today and hit the 4 man High Score of 11,7xx (my first HS on GORF, EVAR). This game rocks. This is my kind of game. This will rival Sea Wolf, Berzerk and Galaxian as my most played game for a while. I love every sequence. Wonder why I never even heard of this one back in the day? Weird. GORF = FUN

yeah, it's definitely a sleeper. i never really played a lot of gorf and kind of wondered what the purpose of it was being that it was partly comprised of galaxian and space invaders, but it's a lot of fun. not to mention the cab art rocks too, especially the lit part under the control panel. definitely worth having.

Gorf is cool.. I liked it as the first 6-8 screens were pretty easy.. Made you feel like you doing something. Once you get to level 3, its starts getting difficult(for me..).

I think if you like gorf, you will also like wizard of wor..

If your into it, you might want to try and find this..

there is also a wizard of wor one..

I have to agree the cab's artwork rocks! I still can't get my light's to work on the joystick for some reason I changed the bulbs and still nothing? Funny thing I never knew about those light's untill I took my joystick apart.

i believe the joystick lights are run through the rank board (or driver board if it's a mini or cocktail.) i have the same problem (replaced bulbs and still no go,) but haven't yet bothered to check all the connections at the rank board.

and to continue with the title of the thread, yeah, Gorf is pretty cool. i'm glad i saved my [JAMMA converted] cab last year even if i didn't go through with a full restoration. it plays pretty nice and the joystick lights are the only serious issue. looked great next to Tron at the Seattle show last year!

I think GORF belongs in any arcade collection of appreciable size.

!

Rank board you say? I still have one bulb that's not lighting up there. Is the power daisy chained thru them, then to the stick?

Don't forget to mention the voice, its what stuck with me all those years. When I started collecting, I knew I'd need a Gorf, I couldn't help thinking about it's smack talk.

My Gorf had a switcher installed when I bought it, and I've never been able to get the rank board or the joystick lights to work.

I love Gorf!!

Never played it in the arcade, I used to play it on the Vic-20 a ton when growing up.

The taunting is the best part!

I always wanted to play Gorf but everyone I come across is out of order.

Yeah, it's sad the way they designed the electronics and wiring of this game. Seems to be so many potential failure points. I can see why they would be out of order everywhere you saw one. I feel fortunate that mine's working complete with vocal insults. For the moment.

Phet, I guess I didn't realize you hadn't played my Gorf at my last party. Jeez, who better to get hands on tips from? lol

It is a great game, very challenging, cool sounds, plenty of different boards to increase the challenge.

You and I are playing doubles at your next party bro....

Love it. Sounds fun. Good thing I don't get embarrassed easily.

From my limited experience, I think my friends didn't like it because it was too difficult to them. This is in hindsight, but its the best guess I can give.

The voices are better the worse you are, the taunting is great.

Great game, now I just need to track down why my is broke (guessing a ram card).

I wonder how hard/feasible it would be to make a new one with modern components? It seems they're a common failure.

For some reason, I prefer Wizard of Wor, it's taunts you the whole time during the game too :)

Nice thing is so many of the cards are cross compatible between Gorf, wizard of Wor and Space Zap. Even the voice chip and IO chips on the main card can be interchanged. My Wizard of Wor was brought back to life with Gorf parts.
