Who Likes Gyruss???

I LOVE ! LOVE ! LOVE MY GYRUSS LOL. It was 1 of the 1s I stood in line to play at the local arcade growing up. I had 1 and had to sell it when business got slow. Bought another from Luckyman and it has a permenet home ;-) I think I will get the High score saver for it next !

This thread inspired me to install HSS kits on both my spare PCBs. Man that kit is extremely easy to install, takes about 10 minutes a board.

Mine's waiting for me to find time to install :-(

Definitely something I've been wanting!

That's like asking what's the difference between a Lamborghini and a Lamborghini kit car....

It was actually a serious question. If you have an original Gyruss and MAME running Gyruss, what would be different between the two. I was responding to a post that claimed that MAME butchered Gyruss. I haven't played an original machine in probably 25 years, if ever (don't remember playing it), so I don't have anything to compare it to.

I didn't like playing it until I got the Monroe joystick, but there aren't any glaring emulation problems that I know of. If there are emulation problems, what are they?

Thanks

In MAME, I feel as though the sound is still not up to par with the real thing. The 60-in-1 version is flat-out terrible.

It was a serious answer. From the outside they look the same, but take them for a test drive and you'll feel the difference. I have a real Gyruss and a machine with an emulated Gyruss (official Konami Arcade Classics multi, which plays as good, if not better, than any MAME version I've tried) in my gameroom (both with Monroe sticks), so I have played them side-by-side. Are there any glaring problems with the emulation? No. Would any serious player who tried both games have trouble picking out the imposter? No way.
If it is a game you really enjoy playing, then you should consider getting the real thing. I say this in general for all classics, but it is particularly true for Gyruss.

The differences in real hardware and mame with gyruss is like night and day. Some games are emulated very well, this is not one of them.
The first thing most people will notice is the sound. Nowhere close to correct. Same goes for the multiboards.
Second would be the graphics are not as good. Lastly, most mame machines dont have a monroe joystick which is a rather unique stick.

Matt and Riptor, thanks for the replies. Have you tried Gyruss in MAME .128u5 or later? That was the latest bugfix for the game listed at mametesters and it fixed a sound issue. There are no unresolved bugs listed for the game at the moment.

What is the difference in the graphics? Like I said, all I have seen is the emulated version, so I really don't know the differences.

Anyone near Reno happen to have a dedicated Gyruss that I can play to find the differences?

I hope to find a dedicated Gyruss to buy someday. It has become one of my favorites over the past few months.

Thanks,
Paul

Im so addicted, Only had it for 3 days, cant stay off it. Its 1 billion times better than the 60-1. I liked playing it on the 60-1, but this is unreal. First dedicated play since the early 80's:D Its on factory settings, 3 ships. Im up to about a 100k!!

Soon you will be angry if you dont get 100K on the first man.

LOL That is so true!

I love my Gyruss, it is never going anywhere unless I find an even nicer one. IIRC my highscore is up to 148k, but I only play it a few times every month or so.

I first played it on MAME and fell in love there. There is something about the way the sounds are mixed on the dedicated that the MAME version will never replicate.

Dunno whats killing you, but I do remember that when you lose a ship and come back firing only one, it seems like they bait you into the double-shooter "object" (I can't remember what it is).

It takes some getting used to getting the double-fire back in the later planets.

Sorry thats probably not much help.
