I would over pay right now for an asteroids or a tron, simply because i want them and there never available.

If you want to drive out here to Phoenix, I'll sell you the Asteroids I picked up a few weekends ago for what I paid for it - $150. It's playing blind, looks really nice, has owl-eye coin door.

Has the nasty Willis CPO though.

You are giving up already? Why?

I like to get games that I "could" sell for what I paid. When I get in a rush I usually pay more than I should in my deal minded thought process.

Of my "rush" purchases, I've only resold 1 of them and broke even on it minus the road trip to go get it, course those are a fun all their own anyway.

Paid $500 for an off-road plus a 6hr road trip to go get it (sold, terrible free play game).

Paid $1,500 for a cyclone pinball delivered to my driveway.

Sounds like it's a bit of a grail for him. I'm kinda 'meh' about that one.

I'll eventually fix it. Just offering it up, is all. Not to just anyone, but to BJ.

Ah, good for you then. Karma for you. Real karma though. Not that cheap crap on here that passes for karma in some circles.

I overpaid for my Tron, mainly due to impatience (plus some ignorance).

At the time, I had been watching ebay for a Tron for quite a while, but they were pretty non-existant in my part of the Midwest. When a fully working one came up, I let myself get into a bidding war.

Still, I haven't seen a nice one within easy driving distance, since.

I don't know if I actually overPAID (as in, initial outlay) on more than 1 or 2.

However, I make the mistake of spending more money on them after the inital purchase; and the additonal mistake of keeping track of those costs. As a result, I'm pretty sure all but 1 of my games would not sell for what I have put into them. And that's just material costs... if I add even minimum-wage for the time I spent working on them, I'd be even deeper under water.

This right here.

All my initial purchases are cheapie, fixer uppers. The only complete, no-work purchase, is my first game, Tempest.

Everything else, is a project to "restore". But, seeing on how they are almost all "labors of love", no worries.
(and I don't factor in any labor costs... that is my enjoyment, part of the fun of projects)

yes, keeping track of costs will only make your heart/wallet ache on these deals.

First game I bought... Firepower... $600 for a fixer-upper back in 2001. It came from DC... 6 hrs away from here. Still have it tho :)

I'm sure I've paid a bit too much for a few games, but its only too much if you regret spending it right :)

cheers

Have I over paid? Meaning have I over paid more than what a seller wanted? yes. Have I paid more than what the machine is worth? Yes. I just figure It's just the price of learning.
You take the bargains and the over priced items and It all kind of works out.

Funny thing is that the few games I would say I over paid for I'm pretty sure most people here would tell me that I got a deal on. At least I see people mention these titles and always say that they are worth more than i feel they are worth.

Ultimately I would not have paid the money for any game if I did not think it was worth the price. So in that sense I've never over paid.

I overpaid for my ms pac and my galaga... 6-700 range each, 8 or 9 years ago probably

But i wanted them in the collection

Everything else i tell myself i can get back my purchase price for, at least. Getting deals is fun though of course

I also bought 6 empty cabinets when i first started (end of 99) sight unseen, shipped from SoCal, a bunch of garbage i dont remember what i paid... Not much total but certainly overpaid

I just drove for 6 hours (total), and paid 350$ this last weekend for a hard drivin' compact. I wanted a race drivin' deluxe, but after looking for half a year now, I got fed up and jumped on this one. the accelerator pedal, steering wheel, and shifter are all shot, some jackass painted over the whole thing, and after about 2 hours it has stopped powering on. This happens to me every time I get impatient, but after I have about $600 (lol) invested, I may almost sorta have what I wanted. And now, there is one listed locally for 200$ Go figure.

I've know I've overpaid for most of my games.

My bargains include:

Tutankham (awesome condition) $200

Burgertime (awesome condition) $400

Can't say I've ever actually overpaid. The Gunbird conversion felt like a bath at the time at $100+~$50 in gas for a "dead" machine. Turns out there was nothing actually wrong with it, just a loose wire in the cord, and oh by the way, the board alone is worth over $100. Turns out my "bath" was a hell of a steal.

Sometimes you want a game so bad that you are willing to overpay just because you don't want to screw up the deal in any way.

Besides what does it mean to overpay? If you are willing to pay the price for it then that is exactly what it's worth to you. It only matters to someone else when you go to sell it.

Agreed. I think those of us in the "know" don't overpay too often, but I do feel sorry for those who don't know the true value of games and end up paying retail. People who pay $2500 for a Pac-Man with a 60-in-1 in it is insane.
I never did understand why retail sellers think their machines are worth 1500 more than the going rate even if they have capped the monitor and cleaned up the board(which most haven't), but I guess if they get some poor sucker to actually pay their asking price, it's worth it to them.

Random examples:

$1800 Arkanoid:

$1500 Capcom Bowling(At least this one is dedicated, but holy $hit!):

$2500 Ms Pac with a 60-in-1 and incorrect vinyl artwork:

I paid a little more than I would have cared for in order to get my Megatouch Maxx but it would have even more if I had it shipped.
