Wrong, there's Chiip, Wiip and a few others I think...but they will only work on the earliest Wii drives.

Indeed... You need an ATmega8L series chip. An EPROM is nothing more than storage, I was just thinking "homemade chip" when I read that, and not actual use of an EPROM.
Considering you can grab one for around $4...it's a no brainer, if you have an older Wii that is. But it's actually easier to just softmod the damn thing.
