who has a modded wii?

I have mine soft modded with an external USB drive attached. (running legitimate backups of games I have purchased of course) Those of us with small children will appreciate not having to deal with game discs getting lost or scratched.

I found the soft modding process very confusing though. (and I'm no stranger to voiding my warranty on consumer electronics ;)) At the time I did mine, there were so many different methods out there, each with a million steps. I followed the most concise guide I could find and luckily it worked out, but I wouldn't want to do it again. Maybe the process is easier now.

The exploit is called "BannerBomb" FYI...

Mine is modded and has a 750GB external drive hooked up to it, on a USB switchbox to my PC as well. Push "A" on the box to connect it to the Wii, "B" for the PC...just push a button and I can put things on from the PC, switch it back and fire up the Wii.

Ive had mine softmodded for years also done about 20 of them for friend and family. I currently use mine with a 1tb external hardrive with 300 games on it. Which format did you choose for your hardrive and which loader are you using?

My drive has a small FAT partition to load all my homebrew off, and an NTFS partition that games in .wbfs format are stored on.
I tried a WBFS partition, but I wound up having trouble with it...games got corrupt etc

Edit: Running the latest version of Configurable USB Loader. I gave up on GX Loader awhile back, it comes easier to use than CFG, but isn't up to date... once you get the hang of CFG you can set it up to look nicer and be more accessible than GX.

wbfs format are horrible i have mine all formatted fat32 and running wiiflow . I also have configurable usb loader but its not as nice as wiiflow, you should look in to it.

I chip modded mine when they first came out. Then it has a soft mod (sort of) over that to run CFG. Why? Because I have a 6 year old who plays it, and 18 month twins who would attack it if they could! Games run off the 2TB external because it is set behind plexi in the front of the entertainment center. you cannot access it to change discs. This keeps it from getting broken by the boys, and my daughter likes the interactive menu for loading her games. (she has grown up with multicades, PC-10s, MAME machines, etc around the house) Running games off the HDD is the best way to go if you have little kids.

Pfft. This is all child's play :D Mine has been softmodded since the original Twilight Hack. I didn't care about it much until the HBC came out. Hell, my system menu is still 1.34U or something like that, though I've been meaning to update to nothing past 4.1 for a long time now. Fortunately, you can just update the shop channel in most cases, so if a VC game comes out that I want, it's usually no problem.

I'm not interested hooking up a HDD and making backups, and I don't pirate current generation games, so I never bothered to try that stuff.

Mine is soft and hard modded. It really is nice having the Wii hidden away and not having to change discs. WiiFlow has always worked great for me so I haven't bothered with anything else and the kids love seeing all the games on-screen and just picking what they want to play.

Careful if you softmod - those "packs" are a real shotgun method and a lot can go wrong. Use Letterbomb (if you are at 4.3) to get homebrew channel and build from there depending on what you want to do.

a buddy of mine just....um.... "fixed" my wii. Lucky for me i have one of the older ones..

My wii now plays dvd movies, can browse the internet, watch youtube videos, etc. I also am running an external drive with um...backups of my games on it. Can stick a new game in and back that up too if that makes sense. If ninty(tm) would have done some of this out of the gate, this would have been a much better system. Im not much of a console guy, and havent shown this wii much love, but now, this is badass.

I have a wii mame app now too, just need to figure out how the hell to get roms on here.

WHo else has one? bring on the slams now i know its coming.

At least for the DVD playback, I think they had several reasons for not doing it:
There's a bit UI hassle in there to do DVD playback well. If you are Nintendo, it has to do everything EXACTLY as the user expects, and between the fact that you're trying to control it with a game controller, and the fact that a lot of DVDs do all kinds of odd shit in their menus, I think they decided they didn't care enough to fool with it. It's not like that feature was going to sell extra units like it did for the PS2 back in the day.

It's basically a standard def box at the beginnings of the high-def age. They knew this, they knew they were going to take shit for being standard def, and I think they decided that DVD playback wasn't going to help that image problem.

Further, I think that they wanted to really give a narrow focus to the marketing message. If you put in all sorts of other features, you can dilute your message and make it harder to get people doing what you want. Especially when you are essentially a toy company, and the dilution would put you over in 'competition' with the low-price crowd that dominate the DVD player biz.

I've been thinking about doing the mod myself, just so I can have DVD playback, but I've also been thinking about modding my PS/2 while I can still get mod chips for it. We'll have to see what I get around to...

There is one reason and one reason alone for the Wii not having DVD Playback...ROYALTIES. Any machine that plays DVD movies has to pay a fee to the DVD Consortium.
It's the same reason the original Xbox didn't play DVDs until you bought the DVD remote kit, they paid royalties on the kit sales, not the console sales.

Any other reasons anyone comes up with, are pulled out of thin air.

Mine is softmodded as well via original Twilight Hack. Since then, I've been updating periodically. Runs emulators via Wii Menu Channels and Wii backups via USB Loader. I have the DVD functionality as well, but who really uses their Wii to watch DVDs?

But honestly, I haven't touched my Wii in a while other than to watch Netflix.

Ahh. I had been under the impression that they would have had to pay the royalties on the drive hardware (I'm slightly surprised that the rights holders let them get away with that, frankly).

who dared to put this thread where it actually belongs???? lol..

mine is soft modded, took him about 2 hrs to backup my original prom(incase of failure i guess each one is unique)soft mod the wii via indiana pwns and burn me a drive with the games i picked. Im running a old 80gb laptop drive, a 2.5" ide and put it in a $12 enclosure from radioshack. I guess his setup is fat32 or whatever... i have the homebews channel as well

theres a wiiloader shortcut, thats what i fire up to scan the hard drive and load games. Its a neat menu all the games are represented by a virtual case and the cases are in a list ou can scan through or page through etc. Pretty cool.

I have mame from the homebrew channwl but not sure how/where to get roms thatll work with the wii.

I plan on a much larger drive if i can teach myself how to get and install games properly.
The wiiloader also allows me to insert a gamedisc, save the game to the hdd( takes 10-20 mins per) and after it allows me to search for game covers so when im done its just like any other game already saved on the drive. Pretty cool man. Plus now my wii actually plays dvds per wiimc.. that right there made my wii 10 times more useful.

Speaking of modded Wii's. Anyone want an unmodified, turned on last about a year ago Wii with 4 remotes and 3-4 games?

PM me if your interested. It will be cheap since we dont use the thing and I just want to get it outa my house.
