a buddy of mine just....um.... "fixed" my wii. Lucky for me i have one of the older ones..

My wii now plays dvd movies, can browse the internet, watch youtube videos, etc. I also am running an external drive with um...backups of my games on it. Can stick a new game in and back that up too if that makes sense. If ninty(tm) would have done some of this out of the gate, this would have been a much better system. Im not much of a console guy, and havent shown this wii much love, but now, this is badass.

I have a wii mame app now too, just need to figure out how the hell to get roms on here.

WHo else has one? bring on the slams now i know its coming.

Mine has a hardware modchip in it.

It really does make the system a hell of a lot more useful. Not sure why they didn't include DVD functionality to begin with.

Don't think you'll get bashed, I'm guessing a good 75% of us have (or had) a softmodded Wii at one time or another.

And I say *had* because now you gotta watch out for the next firmware update, Nintendo breaks the softmod every time you update. So sometimes you gotta wait for the latest hacked firmware update to come out and load it up before you can play the newest games.

from what i understand nintendo kind of gave up. this was updated then modded... should be good for awhile at least..

Probably. Nintendo is probably not updating the firware very often anymore, they used to have excuses for it (like adding little features - shop channel, updating the Mii creator, etc.) but probably aren't adding a whole lot these days you can't just grab from the shop channel. And inevitably someone always defeats the latest update within a couple days.

Just be wary of the system asking to update the firmware though, it shouldn't happen again until the next major first party Nintendo title comes out but any time it updates it will notice the incorrect checksums on the hacked portions of the firmware and overwrite them.

i have a softmodded wii, mine is setup to load wii games from a usb hd and load gamecube backups from dvd, i also have a mame app, aswell as nes and snes though i want a wireless nes and snes controller but the way i have seen i dont like

but so far i cant figure out how to make one connect to the wii and use the sensor bar for button presses

I've got a wode with the internal card that plugs in between the line going to the drive, and a new base with the LCD screen. I have a 2 terrabyte external HD hooked to it.

Mine is modded to be an expensive paper weight/dust collector (NEVER gets used). I thought about soft modding it but nothing on the system appeals to me or the kids.

I have one. It was for my daughter to play backups until I got the Williams pinball collection and the Dragons Lair collection. I also have every Wii virtual console download ready to put on it.

how is the wode? i have read about it but havent seen any reviews or decent ones i should say

I've not used the Wii sitting in the living room in... well... a long long time. The wife just HAD to have the f'ing balance board thing... she used it... ONCE.

Pffft...

I thought about modding mine, but really never saw the point of it. DVD movies? MY PS3 and DVD player do that (and better at it too).

Youtube and Internet? The Wii already does this without modding, plus computers, and heck, even smartphones.

The only reason to even consider modding it from what I understand is to play game backups from an external drive; or am I missing something?

As for the wii itself:

It gets a lot of use here... Mario Kart and Wii Party are the big favorites when I have friends and family over. And heck, I play Kart and Smash Bros online every weekend. And still trying to master New Super Mario Bros.

I guess I'm just a "kid" and I'll cheerfully accept that label, if it fits.

Now the Nintendo DS, I bought that thing with every intention of modding it from day one. I turned it into a cheap PDA that also plays rockin' games! :D

Is modding the Wii overly complicated? I have never looked in to it. I really only care about the backed up games part. I never play the darn thing, but my 9, 7, and 4 year old play the heck out of it and are not necessarily very gently on the discs. A couple of them are scratched pretty bad. Is it pretty easy to choose from the games downloaded to a hard drive?

if your wii is updated to 4.3 it is super easy to do it, you just need a 1-2 gig sd card and the loader to install it, there is a new one where you dont need a save game exploit, it called letterbomb, you put it on your sd card boot the wii and go to your mail and launch the letter and the installer will start

just follow some directions on a guide and your good this is the guide i used
*to the mods just incase there is nothing here that has to do with piracy just how to softmod the wii however remove it if you want*

http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/60921-guide-softmod-any-wii.html

just follow that and your golden you can also ask questions here and im sure someone can help

EDIT also heres a youtube video of the default usb loader that you use http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCxlRKjqdCM

I installed the Homebrew channel just to check out the homebrew scene. The only app I run on there now is WiiRadio, which is kinda cool. I don't do any of that "backup" crap.... I suppose there are legitimate reasons for doing that... like maybe your punk-ass disrespectful kids are not bright enough to understand how to properly handle a game disc. :D

I just did the LetterBomb hack a couple weeks ago. I've installed most of the classic system emulators on there.

I have Mame on there now and have played it a bit. My plan is to buy the Wii NES Retroport:

and use it to connect my old NES Advantage to the Wii. I think it would make a pretty nice joystick for MAME.

Softmodded with an external HDD.

Once in a while someone might find something to play. I like the Wii 4 player Goldeneye. Pretty cool on a 95" screen. Much better than playing the N64 version on a 27" TV BITD

the wode was cool at first, now i'm having issues with it asking for a game disc, and that's while playing a game and it crashes. It has been knocked off the counter a few times, so....
