Should burn in hell for eternity with the rest of the evil doers of this world!!! OK, I feel better now.

but if our games were made with regular screws punk kids would have stolen marquees, bezels and such left and right and they would be truly hard to find these days.

My TRON had the security screws and none of the bits would fit them. Rust prolly didnt help either. I had to cut a slot with a dremel and take them off with a flat blade screw driver. I installed new ones without the security thingy.

Whoever came up with the idea is now rich...loaded! You see these things on more than just games.

However, I would like a shot at kicking his as off the planet for the headaches they cause.

The first time I ever saw security torx bits used on a piece of equipment was in the early 80's on those old Zenith Z-Tac cable boxes. Shortly thereafter, I started noticing more and more "security" type fasteners.... the next being the security hex on Atari Star Wars. :) BTW, those were fun to source!

Back then, a single security bit ran around $10+ and you had to know where to find them - they were not available at every corner store like they seem to be now.

actually, i have a story about these. the metal brace/cover that goes between the bottom of the bezel and the blacklight cover on satan's hollow uses these too. totally forgot to pick one up while i was out, so i used a electronics/micro slotted screwdriver, and they came right out. still gonna get the correct bit, but try that in a pinch.

I have the correct bits but the problem was a few of the bolts were rounded out by a previous owner who probably didnt. Got them all out but it wasnt fun. I am definately going to replace them all with regular harware when I reassemble it.

33 piece set is frequently $1.99 at Harbor Freight tools, and includes all of these security Torx bits.

Thanks for reminding me. I might be heading that way for work in the next day or two and have a few on both my Pengo and Frenzy I'm getting ready to do some restoration work on. I unusually do what Dan suggested with creating a "SLOT" w/ the Dremmel... However, the dremmel is broken and $2.99 is cheaper than a new dremmel. ;)

And for a 'few dollars more' one can get this set and be covered for whatever security type fasteners are encountered (probably):
