I just got my new business logo done at 99Designs. I'm very good with Photoshop due to my line of work so I've made a lot of logos myself but I'm relaunching my site and wanted a real chance to capture my vision more creatively then my mind goes. I also didn't want to pick from a few designs that one designer came up with for me. If they don't get the vision then things get awkward and they typically don't. So I came across this site which runs it like a design competition and winner gets paid. This way you get 60+ designs from probably 30+ designers. If you keep active giving feedback then they really work hard for the win. If there is nothing you like they will extend or there is a money back option.

I chose the most expensive platinum options and ended with over 100 designs I think but I'm sure the others would be fine also.

(Yes, it's an affiliate link)

If you have any interest feel free to message or email me any questions or if you'd like to see my new logo. You have my email address from the dash...

Just an option...

That's exactly why I'm out of design...and won't freelance. All these people working for free, one person gets paid. Awesome for the client, shitty deal for the designers. I honestly never understood why a designer would participate in a design competition program like that. I never have; never will. But that's just me.

Imagine a guy picking up 50 guys to dig fence posts; the one who works the fastest and does the most gets paid...the rest go home to their families empty handed. That would never happen in the real world outside of art, there's no incentive to work, yet it's common place. So retarded....and unethical. Guess that's part of where the "starving artist" cliche comes from.

I participated in one design competition like that, in college, because I was forced to as an assignment. A start up came to the class and said it needed an illustration and logo for its new website...and all 20 of us students had the privelage to "build our portfolio" with this "incredible" opportunity. The "winner" would get an iPod....they get 40 free designs. I remember being like, F that! After we designed them, we were to present our designs one on one to the company, professionally. I spent 10 minutes making their design requests in Microsoft paint.....stick figures, 9 minutes more than I wanted to spend. I matted and mounted them an dressed in nice clothes. I made my presentation, explained to them I gave them exactly what They wanted, to my ability. My professor looked horrified, she knew I was one of the best design students in the class. At the end of the presentation, a panel member asked me, "Pardon our asking, but did you enjoy this assignment?" I said, "Of course I did, what makes you say that? Wouldn't you?" Unfortunately, I didn't get picked. No iPod for me. I ended up having to buy my own with a PAYING job. Boo.

As a side note, the business failed a couple months later. Karma.

Wurd Yo!

As a former graphic designer and art teacher, I've experienced 2 rather unappreciated creative occupations.

My regular designer would charge me $300 (would include 3 choices to work from and $100 each additional). The winner of this comp got their share which was $700-$800. I will likely be following up with him privately for direct paid additional work so he not only gained a win but also gained a regular customer willing to pay for higher dollar designs. Some of these designers win hundreds of comps per year making what I'd have to assume is $100k+ per year which isn't a starving artist and they still have their regular clients.

The people that lose are the ones not reading the brief, critiques, or guidance. The 3 that listened the most made it to my final round and all got paid something. Most others did good but we're not listening close enough to direction so they lost. As they do more they will understand that more and win more and more often. Once they are recognized as Platnium designers then they have a smaller amount of designers to compete against and they get to exclusively work on the highest paying jobs.

In my opinion it doesn't ruin any industry... it helps it. Especially when it promotes listening to the client and get paid ;)

You sound like a salty designer that can draw stick figures.

I work construction. Do you think i enjoy giving free estimates? And wasting an hour, sometimes more measuring a job that i might not get? No i dont. But guess what, I still offer free estimates, because my pricing and work speaks for itself. I can't tell you how many times i had a home owner call me back to finish a job another contractor didn't finish, or did a very poor job. And even though it bothers me i didnt get the job originally because some fly by night outbid me, i still took the job and charged even more then i originally quoted. You wont get far in life with that attitude my friend.

I hear ya. It's a matter of perspective. For people such as yourself, it is a great thing. For Designers with the opinion such as myself, it is a bad thing. I mean, after all....who wouldn't want 50 men digging fence posts holes with the expectation of only having to pay one? It's a winning situation.

Ultimately, the competition aspect of design is considered unethical within the graphic design industry, even the AIGA agrees.

http://portland.aiga.org/design-contests-are-unethical/

I've never heard of that website. I just googled it and found an article review by a guy who claimed he recieved over 500 designs for his new logo in a few days.....so many he couldn't give feedback to all the Artists. In his review, he acknowledge the site is controversial due to its ethics questionabilty.

Ultimately, competition sites such as these exist because of the desperation of Artists.... so really, the fault is on them. I highly doubt designers on that site are making six figures...that would mean they need to win atleast 100-150 comps a year....(lol, like going to work is a sweepstakes)...but if that's how they choose to operate their careers....it's their choice.

LOL. Im "salty" and have an "attitude" and "draw stick figures" because I don't work for free? Do you have any idea how much work goes into a single design? I guarantee it's more than an hour writing a bid....which is standard practice for your industry.

Or are you one of those guys that thinks recreating an entire set of arcade artwork digitally should "only take a couple hours"....because you know nothing about the process?

Also, sorry Darrin for the thread jack....it's KLOV. :)

It sounds to me, you had picked the wrong profession. I would think that school assignment would have been red flag to bail.

Hopefully whatever you are doing now, is something you enjoy.

Yeah... I'm done commenting. It's getting pretty off topic. I was just trying to defend my perspective based on who I recommended. If anyone believes it's unethical then that's their view and I respect that. I just view it differently.

Moving on. You have my recommendation :)
