I don't know why I'm remembering this game from my youth, but I remember playing it somewhere in my past, and the memory came since I've been playing it in my MAME cockpit.

The screen currently is showing in MAME as the 4 player cocktail version, and the driving area runs vertically in it in my current configuration. I'm thinking about flipping it so the driving area is horizontal, but for now I'm simply happy I'm getting to play it at all!

Who else loves this classic? Is the shifter on the original game simply for forward and reverse I take it?

I never played it BITD, but I enjoy it now. In fact, I grabbed a 4 player cocktail from Darryl a couple of years ago and brought it back to WA for one of the collectors out here.

Yes the shifter is a forward/reverse switch.

DD is awesome. I had a chance to get a 4 player when I first started the hobby. I should have piced it up but did not.

It's on my big multi and gets played often! I want to build a Mame cockpit! :)

I love the game!! I played it for the first time back in 1988 at a mall in Jersey. Where's Superbee at? He loves this game too. I'm still waiting to get my hands on his,he has the upright version.

It was my first arcade game, a 2-player UR in absolutely gorgeous condition. I got rid of it in order to acquire an Elevator Action.

The sideart on the UR was classic and awesome - almost a throwback to EM machines.

There's a 2 player version emulated in MAME that works fine. Give that a try.

And yes, the shifter is for forward and reverse.

The 4 player version at Crabtowne was fully working the last time we were there.

Add me to the list of people who love DD. I used to play it back when it was in arcades and pumped many quarters into that game. It's pretty underrated, IMO.

I love my two player upright. And it's still not for sale. ;)
I got rid of the MCR hum and I am now working on capping and rejuving the monitor. Mine also has the boardstack and not the single board.

Very cool!

Hey, another dumb question if I may: is the pedal supposed to be brake? Or gas? In the MAME version your car starts rollling as soon as the game starts up, so I'm guessing the pedal is the brake? I haven't been able to look at the control mapping yet which is why I'm asking.

And I found the files for the 2-player version rather than the 4, thank you to all who made mention of that!

VG, IIRC the pedal is just for the gas... there isn't a brake.

Interesting. I wonder why in the MAME version you just start rolling, and I couldn't find a key already mapped for the gas? Usually it's CTRL or ALT for driving games, and with this game CTRL is one direction, and ALT is the other (currently).

I will need to make some time to look at the mappings for this game. Thanks again for the help re: info with the controls!

What's funny is that there really isn't much to the gameplay- you move your car, you hit other cars, you try to keep your car running in the process. What makes it so magical anyway?? It's gotta be that you keep slamming into other people. I can imagine it being fun if you're playing with 3 other folks and they start yelling bc you hit them LOL

Yup, that would be the demo derby business model. lol

BIID, this was exactly it. Someone would yell out "HEY!" every few seconds after they got hit by a buddy who wasn't supposed to hit them. And you could also be evil and team up on people. But that alliance would inevitably break down after you and your "teammate" hit each other one too many times, either by accident or on purpose...

I've got the 4 player cocktail machine. One of the most played machines at parties! Simple and fun machine....I've also got the conversion kit for DD, so you can play "Sarge".

DD Hoarder

I would probably be classified as a Demolition Derby "hoarder".

I have had three cocktails that are currently with other collectors in WA and currently have one working upright and one that is in the garage needing work.

On the shelf I have a couple working boardsets, a couple non-working, several steering sets, and quite the collection of wiring and manuals if anyone needs help troubleshooting.

Props to Oz, FullThrottle, JoeMagiera, DJ DNS, Chris25810, RikiTiki, and Keiths3.
